I took my horse to the vet yesterday afternoon to get his yearly stuff done. He got all his vaccinations, teeth floated, sheath cleaned and fecal test. He was fine once he woke up and we got him home... ate normal everything as it should be. Today hes just blah.... and he stocked up on his hind legs even though he had most of the morning turned out in the pasture. He just seems like he doesnt feel that great. I was back n forth most of the day we were hauling in dirt for my arena so I kept checking on him I  between hauls.. when we finished with the dirt i took him out and lunged him, well i just had him walk for about 20-25 minutes both directions to see if the swelling would go down.. it did a little. I also gave him a small dose of bute to see if that would help him. Tonight he just picked at his food... not like him, he passed up on  the feed and is eating his hay instead. I feed him soaked beet pulp with his pellets so it was a soft mush for his teeth in case he was sore ... but he just didnt want it. I have him in standing wraps with some sore no more poultice and liniment in his stall and hes eating his hay as per usual... hes never had a reaction like this before ... hopefully he will be back to himself tomorrow. Does this just sound like a reaction to the work he had done yesterday?

I just snuck out and blanketed him because it got really cold! He seems like he felt a little better, nosing my pockets for something to eat while I blanketing him. Plus he did end up finishing up his feed so that's a good sign. Hes not one to pass up any meal, like, ever so when he wasnt eating earlier it made me worry! I'm sure I'll be up several more times to peek on him. I left the aisle light on in the barn so I could see in his stall from the house

We would expect nothing less than that from you!   He was probably just feeling a little yucky from all his vet "stuff" and he's coming out of it now.

Yep! Sounds pretty darn normal for a horse that has vaccine reaction. I have one just like yours! Mine will have a temp of 102-104 within just a few hours after being vaccinated. Sooooooo what we do with him is my vet has me give a dose of banamine 12 hours before shots , then a dose at the same time as shots. Then monitor temp. His fever usually breaks the evening of the following day so he will usually have 3-4 doses of Banamine 12 hours apart for couple days. Then back to usual. The banamine keeps him on feed and I usually vaccinate when I still have some green grass as he will always ear that. He used to get neck swelling but I switched to veterra gold vaccine and that doesn't happen anymore.

I was going to say to check his temp and medicate if he has a fever. This happened to mine after years of vaccinations, so I don’t give them all at one time to him.

I nneed to go look at his record to see exactly what she gave him. I got side tracked at the vet talking to the gal inside while they were working on him. But I'm glad to report hes looking good this morning.  Ate all his feed and the swelling is gone from his legs. I did read up a bit on giving him banamine before and after.. I'm going to call the vet tomorrow and report to them what he did so next time we can use something different or space some out, hes back to his normal self it seems. I've had this good for 8 years and hes never had this type of reaction.

Glad he's feeling better!! My one older  gelding would always react after vaccines. He would stand there and not move his neck and sometimes shake. Wouldn't eat and just looked miserable. So he got banamine with vaccines and then 12hours later. Thankfully (knock on wood) the last few times he's been good with no reaction

This is part of the reason I do my west nile, and 5 ways seperately and typically 2 weeks apart. I just think that is a lot of things for thier system to be asked to do all at once. I know a lot of people give the combo shots with no issues but I its just as easy for me to give them seperately. That was they have less to process and if they do react, I know which one they reacted to and can maybe do things differently next time.

Glad he is feeling better!!!

I always give my horses bute on vaccine day and the day after. It def helps with soreness.

Something to keep in mind for next year, the Vetera line of vaccines is suppose to cause less vaccine reactions. Hope your boy gets to feeling better quickly!

Yep, I switched to Veterra gold for that reason. My vet is not a fan of combo vaccines but I would rather not have to give him 6 shots, get 6 fevers, over a few weeks time. I want it over and done. LOL My gelding gets fever with veterra gold but no swellings like before.

Hes definitely back to his old self. Been working him daily, hes lost more weight, he needed to though.. I'm seeing a big difference in him since starting the metabolic support from platinum. I was able to move up another hole on his rear cinch... that's 3 holes! There was a time I could barely get to the first hole on him. He got FAT. So between diet change, daily exercise, less pasture time and the added supplement hes trimmed up good.. I'm going to cut him back to one scoop a day on the metabolic support, the platinum folks said eventually I could when he reaches an ideal weight. That happened faster than I thought it would. Hes looking good... maybe I need a little of that metabolic support lol!!

I know a lot of us say "I don't want them reacting 2-3 times so I just give them one vaccine all at once and get it over with" but if your human child had a reaction to a vaccine where they were lethargic and didn't eat for several days or a parent got a flu shot and same thing happened I'm almost certain the next vaccine scheduled would be handled differently...just a thought.  Because its easier for us doesn't mean its better.

I agree. I wont be doing all that ever again! This is the first time he had that reaction. I certainly dont want it to happen again. I told the vet and they said next time we will spread it out. I only do it once a year, no boosters. I do have to take him back in 4 months for another fecal and deworming.... I signed up for platinum colic care ... his last fecal was zero EPG so the vet said not to derworm him for at least 4 months and come back for another test and they will deworm him accordingly... if needed.
