Location: Kansas | I mix it half and half with Equine Senior for a 27 year old. I think it's great feed although very expensive. |

| It's 40% NSC. Pure sugar. Won't touch it. |

| Non structural carbohydrates 40% is an insane level. I have a friend that feeds this, she says its literally the only thing the horse will eat... I'd just feed hay and alfalfa before feeding this stuff personally.... |

Non Structural Carbohydrates
I thought non structural carbohydrates are products of photosynthesis the plant makes for its own metabolism? Like glucose, fructose etc. Which products do you feel are the NSC? |

| You can google NSC values of pretty much any feed, but anything below 20 is usually an acceptable level. SOme of the low carb and starch feeds are below 15 even. 40 is pretty much pure sugar. |

Location: Idaho | Great point! I have always fed whole oats and added beet pulp or rice bran if needed to a diet... there was a promotional on Omelene 200 and I was thinking about it for my 4 year old, but I really prefer the simplier feed program! |

Location: Kansas | It can easily be made more bland by adding rolled or steamed oats. Amazing that so many people feed it. |

While I can google, I will say all carbs are composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Glucose and fructose are simple sugars. They're five carbon ring and are called monosaccharides. Whereas sucrose - table sugar is a disaccharide where glucose and fructose bonded together. Cellulose - in a plant cell walls is a complex carb and is called a starch. Which is what I asked - which feed ingredient do you feel is a NSC? |

Whole oats have a NSC of 45-50%. And can be higher. But low sugar then the other two ingredients you listed. So, is it a wash?

| And don't forget there is the type of sugar in fruit and the type of sugar in the snickers bar. Most health professionals will tell you the fruit sugar is better than the processed candy bar variety. Oats are more the fruit type. Omelene is a bag of Candy bars. |

Location: SW New Mexico | I'm feeding Brother Dave a mixture half and half of rolled oats and Nutrena senior. I bought a bag of omolene 200 and mixed it half and half with the rolled oats this time. Dave loves it and it smells great. But I may go back to the Nutrena senior because I do agree that too much sugar is bad. But I figured since I am mixing it... I'm cutting it down some.
