Shopping for next years breedings and noticed GBL is up to $6,500 for a stud fee.  I was curious what everyones thoughts were on that.  I am NOT questioning how nice he is, hence was wanting to breed my mare to him.  I could breed my mare directly to ASOF for $5,000 or to Epic Leader for $4,500 so just wondering if it's worth the "extra".

My opinion... He puts a great mind on his foals.  They are athletic and capable and probably even elite.  He has a jug head and is not going to wow people with his good looks.  He's 19 years old and sat hidden in the back pasture for 15 years.  He has reletivly common bloodlines, with lots of alternatives for nearly the same thing.  I think he is over priced for me, but his book is full for the last couple years, so that implies his stud fee is too low.  If you want one, I'd get on it fast.  He may not be around very much longer due to age but keep in mind foal value generally goes down once a stud dies. Out of sight, our of mind.

I'm dying to cross my mare on him because he seems to offer a lot of what she needs balanced out. The baby would be for keeps, so for me $6,500 wouldn't be a problem because I'm going to spend more than that if I wanted a colt out of someone else's mare. They're selling for decent prices as 2 & 3 year olds, I've seen many listed for $20K or more, not even on the pattern yet and they're sold fairly quickly, even out of no name mares. So there's been a decent market. He's been a "sleeper" for a long time & I think thats a lo of the allure too. People want to get them while they can type of thing & they seem to do well at futurities. I can usually tell when one is running on the webcast without having to look at the draw. They have their own style. I'd say if you like him specifically more than others and are ok with the price, do it. But if you like other studs just as well for your mare and they're significantly less then maybe go with the others. I'm not breeding mine for possibly 2 yars or so but I'm hoping he's stilla round. The Epics are going to keep having a strong demand I think too. I think too many people overlooked him when he first came on the scene. My mare is closely FWF bred so he's not really on my short list but I've been dying for one of his colts since he started running years ago. I think really just pick the one thats going to match the best with your mare because theres a strong market for all 3 you mentioned. ASOF are very much either love them or hate them type horses with that signature turning style they have, all the ones in my area make the riders look like ragdolls flailing around.  I think TGL is going to be more user friendly all around & so are the Epics I think

I bred to someone else last year (was able to get a discounted breeding on a big name) so I hadn't looked at him since 2019. I had already decided to take this year off form breeding because of work, so when I started looking for a breeding to buy this fall I was a little surprised at the price lol.

Valid points. What do you think of the resale of his foals? I breed to keep, but like to breed with resell in mind.

Thats interesting to see the sale price of his babies!  My oldest mare happens to be my best mare and if she would ever throw me a filly Id love to have it as her replacement. That's why I'm only wanting big names for her.   I can afford his stud fee but not sure how I feel about spending it.

From an inside note from a well known breeding facility, he ships awful and they always have trouble settling a mare. If I was going to breed this year, I'd be looking at JL Dash Ta Heaven at $3500, Epic Leader at $4500 or even Blazin Jetolena.

A friend had her mare settle right away to TGL. Never heard anything poor about the semen quality.

One of the stallions mentioned above is notorious for bad semen though so. . .

I dropped my mare off at the vet on a Thursday and picked her up that Sunday.  She said semen quality was just fine.  Have a beautiful bay filly standing in my lot as a result.

Epic has terrible semen as well.  Jl Dash Ta Heaven is priced good at $3500, except what happens if he sells in a couple weeks??

Here in Utah you can find a goodbye lane in the 2-5 year old range for $6500 several times a year.  Not everyday, but often.

Oh that's a little disappointing. Hmm, not sure if it's worth the risk.

"Mom"

50005000100100100100

Goodbye Lane has a uniquely shaped head.  He throws all kinds but mostly nice heads.   Like my friend Dena Kirkpatrick said who is winning on a GBL " we are not in halter glass" And GBL is out a DTFmare so a course head is going to come out here and there.   Dena told me at least 5 years ago when she went to see him to breed my mares to him.    The prices of GBL horses have increased dramatically - it has been awhile since I have seen one for 6,500 ..... years in fact.

Epic Leader has been under new management - one of my best friends had no problem getting a foal from him and breed back succesfully.

Horses are not pieces of equipment.  Each situation is different.  Be mindful that there may be someone reading this who believes everthing the read on the internet.  Do you own homework before deciding what legit and what is not.   My source of this was Dena herself since she introduced me to GBL many years ago.

I agree about doing your own homework. I was hesitant to post about this because I didn't want it to seem like I was bashing him in anyway. But then I thought to myself, this board has a wide spectrum of people and several who have been able to experience them and be around them. So, as wanting to educate myself as much as possible, I thought it best I reach out for different opinions.

There are all sorts of posts talking about temperament different stallions throw, this isn't much different. Just essentially wondering if I should spring for the price and curious on everyone's input.

How many GBL have won over $100k excluding Pink Buckle winnings?  What are the names, and how much have they won?
