Hi! I brought home a 2 year old filly, we got her home late Sunday night. It was a 10+ hour drive and she didn't drink at all during the drive but drank a decent amount when we got home. I have her in a stall with a runout paddock with horses across the fence so she is not isolated and can go in and out as she pleases. She doesn't seem to like my stock tank so I have a bucket hanging in the stall to encourage her to drink. She has a salt block. She is eating great, just not drinking as much as I would like her to.

Everything I'm reading is making me worry that the stress of the trip on top of not drinking might be causing her to develop an ulcer - thoughts? This is the first horse I've had significant water issues  with so I want to make sure I do everything I can to help her settle and relax & start drinking more. I ordered rein water by Redmond (not carried near me, supposed to be delivered Friday), what should I do in the meantime? I have tossed around the idea of an electrolyte paste (suggestions?) and considered treating for ulcers to be on the safe side- I could imagine that 10 hours of traveling would stress any horse out enough to cause issues (suggestions for that as well?)

Any tips or suggestions you might have would be great and ease my anxiety! :)

Try mixing a half a scoop of equine senior (or similar type feed that will soak up some of the water, beet pulp based or you can even soak some alfalafa cubes in there, you get the idea) into a couple gallons of water. It will taste really yummy and encourage her to drink more while shes trying to get the rest of that food at the bottom. I have a gelding that's picky about drinking and this works for him. Good luck! Electrolyte paste will work too, really doesnt matter the brand, or you can get the powder to put on her food if she will eat it.

As above, soak any type of grain she may be getting in water. Also helps decrease impaction risk. I'd also recommend Gastro-Plex paste, MVP can get it shipped to you quickly. They also have an electrolyte paste. To get by you can give her Maalox,or generic equivalent, to coat her stomach from acid buildup, try to get around 60cc into her. Introduce some alfalfa if she doesn't already get some. With that you should be fine to get all settled in. Gastro-Plex paste will come in handy as well once you move her beyond there, like out with others, new turnout, etc

There is some stuff called HORSE QUENCHER......... its cheap and works AMAZING!!!!!! My horses LOVE the peppermint flavor. It comes in several flavors. THey used to drink " so so " on the road and didn't like the water at a few fairgrounds I went to. One hamdful of this stuff and they SUCK down the water. Its kind of like a grain and in the bucket its at the bottom. ALso mixes with the water some. THey will suck the water down to get to the grain part. I tried EVERYTHING before this and won't ever change.  As for ulcers, ULCERGUARD.... get a couple tubes from vet or feedstore and give the 1/4 tube daily for a week or 2.. I wouldn't worry about all the pellets and supplements, I go with what is proven to actually deal with the stomach acid.

Congrats on your new horse!

I've tried rein water, didn't have luck with it. I really love Horse Quencher though! I have a gelding who refuses to drink during races, trailer rides, or during the summer. Horse Quencher has cleared up his problems!

Electrolyte paste might work, it really depends on the horse. I know that some horses refuse to even put it in their mouth or refuse to drink even more. On the other hand, I think your best bet would be to wet down any grain that is being given.

I would talk to your vet about ulcers. Get her scoped/checked. Though many horses show ulcers in different ways, it's still good to get her checked by a vet.

Toss a tablespoon and a half of regular salt into her feed and mix it up.
