I talked on here a while back about my horse that turned out to be a hermaphroditic. Well my spouse said no more horses until I do something with this horse.  I personally do not think this horse will ever be rideable, he is too unpredictable and I am afraid of him hurting someone if they try to ride him.  I don’t want to put him down because he has no health issues and I don’t feel it would be right to destroy his life.  So I was thinking about giving him away, but I worry that someone might try to ride him.  I would give full disclosure of what is going on with him.  I just thought someone might want him as a pasture mate for another horse.  He is also papered, so would this be a good idea or not, and if I did give him away would I need to send the papers with him or not.  I don’t want someone taking him and trying to make money off of him (he has Easily Smashed, Streakin Six, Chicks Beduino and First Down Dash all on his papers).

Or should I try again this spring with getting him to ride.  I am at a loss and my spouse is out of patients.   I guess I am looking for a miracle or some words of encouragement.

How old is this horse? Can we get more background? Vet diagnosis's, etc?

He is a 8 year old, I have his mom and he has been with me since he was born (which makes this even harder)  I had him broke out when he was 3, he worked in a feed lot for 2 summers and rode great, my granddaughter was riding him for 4h, he has a really nice handle on him and can spin on a dime, then all of a sudden this last summer he began to buck and rearing.  He tried to jump over a penal fence with her on his back.

I took him to the vet when he was 2 to be cut, but there was nothing there, the vet said wait a while and we would try again.  His 3 year old year took him back and the vet tried and said he could not find anything, and that the testicles were up inside him and he would be fine and that he couldn’t breed.  So I had him broke and was using him.

When he started acting like he did this summer I took him to another vet for a second opinion, with blood work and exploratory procedures, we discovered that he did not have any testicles but did have two ovaries that were producing hormones.  The vet put him on a regumate and started calling universities to see what the options would be.  The end result was leave the ovaries and give the shots.

I have not tried riding him since the shots were started, and I wanted to wait until this spring and start training him again and see how he does, but my spouse thinks he has something mentally wrong with him because he produces hormones and doesn’t think he will ever be rideable.  The vet that did the diagnosis said he has treated 5 other cases where the mare turned out to be a stallion and they went in and removed the testicles and they horse went on to perform with no mental problems or hormone problems, but this was the first case that he had that the horse appeared male and turned out to be female.

The horse is not dangerous or anything, he is a big lap dog and loves to be with you and wants attention. I keep telling my spouse that I think the shots will help and that he maybe a little buddy soured and to give me one more chance with him, but my spouse doesn’t want me to get hurt on him.

So am I being realistic, thinking he can be rode or should I cut my losses.  I need a replacement barrel horse and he was supposed to be it.

I'd have the ovaries removed.

The vet said if I had the ovaries removed then I would have to give him a form of progesterone shot to make up for taking the ovaries out and the regumate shot would be cheaper than that shot.

I'd try again in the spring, or send him to a good hand that can ride him over the winter and see how he does since he's been on the shots, maybe that would give your spouse more confidence in him and let you try again. You can try to ground work him some too and see how he handles that as a safe way to see if he's going to be silly before you do get on. Either way, I'd have someone experienced with you for the first few sessions and just see what y'all can do. You're 8 years in, unless you have a viable option as someone to give him to where you know he and the new owners would be safe, I'd hang on to him. He sounds really nice, just gotta figure him out. Good luck!

Since he was used in a feed lot talk to the cowboys that rode him and see if they would be willing to take him and use him on the feed lot. I know a few men that work in the feed lots have a few horses that they use.

I would say he is trying to tell you something since he was riding fine before. A lot goes on with their hormones 1when they are growing (just like a teenager). Since this didn't start until later I would say something is hurting related to his anatomy. I would pull a full blood panel and test for EPM as well as anything else that they can. Xrays for kissing spine since it seems to be when you're on his back. Hormones may be screwed up with the shot/some organ producing the opposite hormone.

I would not say this horse is hopeless considering he was not like this before. I'd say a very reputable vet that has connections with others is where I would start.
