Can you have a palmar digital neuretcomy done twice? I have read a few people have, my vet says you can't, and another vet I've spoken to says you can but it is done above the fetlock. So... who has had a neurectomy done after the nerves regenerated after the first one? Was it done any different than the first neurectomy?

My moms horse she went to the NFR on was nerved twice. I was just a kid so I don't remember if second one was done different than the first. I do know that when it grew back , it was more painful than before it was done the first time.

How long has it been since you had the first one done?  Why did your vet feel it was necessary to do this in the first place?

He was done in February of 2021. Hasn't had any issues yet, but me being a worrywart I'm already thinking about the future... He was diagnosed with navicular and we tried everything, this was our last option. We did an MRI to make sure there was no soft tissue damage or any other issues, I wouldn't have nerved him without doing the MRI.

I had one done twice, though I’m not certain the 2nd was warranted but none the less it was done. Horse came back strong as ever and did well for a few more years before coming up lame again. Decided at that point it was best to retire.

Was the second neuretcomy done differently? Did they have to make the incision higher up?

I have looked into this for my gelding but have not done it.

Sometimes the first one lasts less than 6 months - sometimes several years. Yes it can be redone but there is a limit to how many times it can be redone. Nerve regenerate and the pain receptors come back. Each time you go in there to sever them, you create scar tissue. Eventually, there's too much scar tissue to find what you need to fine, basically.
