i have a 4 year old mare that is eligible to be registered with aqha but it was just never done. A close friend of mine owned the mare and stud she was foaled from so i will have no trouble getting him to give me any info needed to register her and i really want to take advantage of aqha's deal right now to register her for $170. My question is since she is over 48 months she has to have dna testing done. Can anyone tell me exactly what needs to be done and how to do it? I have never registered a horse before and there is so much to it that it is overwhelming but i really want to get it done. Thanks in advance

Both mare and stallion's DNA have to be on file with AQHA, if not, they have to be tested. Also I am almost positive that the stallion needs to be 5 panel tested. Your horse has to be DNA tested also. You will have to check AQHA's schedule as to costs if these tests. DNA tests run around $50 each. The 5 panel test runs around $100. A breeding report on the stallion needs to be filled if it hasn't. Not sure about that cost. You will have to pay for an AQHA membership in order to get any AQHA discounts and mare owner may have to also.  Membership is $55 a year. So if the mare and stallion have been tested and a stallion report was filled and there is a special on late registrations, you are looking at at least $275. If mare and stallion have not be tested you can add at least another $250. Unless your horse is some spectacular breeding it will cost you mor to go through the process of registering than it is worth. You could start by calling AQHA and giving them the mare's name and number and stallion's name and number to see if their DNA is on file.

I checked and the only special I found on registering an aged horse was $300.
