I have a broody that foundered due to colic. Vet said xrays show little to no coffin bone movement but this mare is super lame. Vet said she doesn't need to be moving around alot but Id like to keep her some what comfortable till the farrier arrives which could be a week or more. Never dealt with a foundered horse. She's on hay only right now, stalled in the barn and is up and down alot. Any info would be awesome or suppliments that need to be started. Been researching and am finding alot of conflicting info ??
PLEASE HELP
Justy bringing my good horse back who foundered as a result of a hock injection reaction. He rotated quite a bit but is now sound and just about ready to run again. The best thing you can do is get some ice bands that go around her fetlocks and put them on for 20min 3x a day. Cloud boots are a life saver as well. Its taken my horse nearly 5 months to recover and he is actually ahead of schedule. Feed only grass hay and nothing goes in her mouth over 10% NSC
Dont feed fresh cut hay, if you can find older hay thats been sitting for a few months.
I would spend the money on soft ride boots and have her in a deeply bedded stall. icing the feet can help too, especially if the founder was due to endotoxemia from the colic. its just a long battle that is going to take a while.
I also highly recommend the Cloud boots! They were a life saver for my mare when she foundered (due to too much green grass).
Soft ride boots! Or whatever version of boots you prefer but they are life savers and your horse will be so much happier.
Check the FB sites for used hoof boots. Many nearly brand new SoftRides and other standing boots for sale.
