Alright, so the other night we're at a barrel race and the horse I ran had been off for just a couple weeks because of abscess. Now he's back and was slow working great and I gave him a bit to get legged back up then made a run. Exhibitioned great was a little on the muscle the whole time but he's still in the middle of seasoning. Anyways he came on in and totally just missed 1st watching the video it looks like he just ran right by and wasn't even in there to turn a barrel. This is the first horse I've ever seasoned and am still in the process of finishing.( I didn't start him I bought him while he was exhibitioning and was ready to run). Any thoughts on what I could do to get him coming in and looking for 1st or how to slowly add speed without blowing his mind? Once he's done with 1st he turned 2nd and 3rd just fine. I'm wondering if I just asked for to much. All comments are appreciated! Thanks! Also, have been having some trouble getting him to pick the correct lead coming into the arena. Does just fine when I circle before coming into first but he just leans on me coming through the ally, any advice how to help with that? Thanks!

I'd say he was probably just on the muscle and ready to run and was out to just run at first. Hard to judge after one run.

The leaning against you coming into the arena- I would be sure he is standing up in the circle beforehand and not leaning on you at all. Be sure you have a spur into that inside. When practiving/riding I would put my foot into him and make him get over. at random times. Eventually just a little pressure on that side he will be moving and standing up
