I did a search but didn't have much luck. Who has used it? How much? How often? How long? Results?

I used it for the first time last summer. The vet gave me a dosage to follow but I can't remember offhand how much I gave. I followed the vet recommendation at first and then gradually increased the time between shots. It worked really well for my horse when nothing else seemed to help.

i have it and use it when needed.

to me i call it the "brain reset" drug lol - sometimes if weather is really bad and they have to be stalled or if there is a training issue and need to be "reset"

u give .5cc IM every 2 weeks - that works best - keeps them from being on a roller coaster

now it can cause some loose stools, so watch for that but typically only couple days

good luck

Not a fan. I've had horses come here that were on it that were completely numb. Sometimes it can have the opposite affect and make them worse.
I think it was an article in the Horse magazine that said if they didn't have a loose stool, you didn't give enough.

just be aware, there are different milligram strengths and duration depends on whether it's in a water or oil carrier. The vet  told me about somone that gave x mg but didn't realize it was double strength. The horse walked in circles and was in a stooper for a few days.

this was the drug of choice 10 yrs ago, now, not so much.

Yikes, proper training can fix way more than a drug ever can.

Thanks vjls! Not everyone understands that some things can't be be " trained " out. Circles, treats, bit, wet saddle pads, or multiple years at rhe trainers. He is what he is. That's why meds exist.

JMHO. For those who want to jump on the drug train think about this. Maybe your horse doesn't want to run barrels. If thats the case, you are wrong for giving them a drug because YOU want to run barrels. I see alot of horses who hate to run barrels but their riders just have to make them do it regardless of what it takes. That is So Wrong. Not every person can be a 1-D barrel racer. Not every person can be in the olympics. Not every horse wants to be a jumper. If you have to resort to a drug because you just have to run your horse for God's sake, find the horse a job he or she WANTS TO DO. Go to a REAL PROFESSIONAL TRAINER to ride your horse and assest them. Don't just jump on the drug train. Your horse isn't asking for drugs, you are forcing them to have them because of your own ego. Do your horse a favor. Do whats right for him or her. Get help from someone before you slam a needle in your horses neck.

Start your own thread. This horse doesn't want to stand in his own skin. Hell, I'd be happy if I could walk in a stall with him without being in danger. I guess they are like people and have their own little genetic idiosyncrasies. I am stuck with these two. I have to ride what I have. I'm not running barrels as much as I'm trying not to die. Nobody wants them. I had absolutely no idea what I was getting into when I bought what I did. They are athletic but insane. I can't ride them or sell them.  I haven't met anyone who rides one that says it's a joy. I'm old and trying to figure out the best way to deal with what I have without giving up riding completely. Quit being so **** judgmental. If I wanted this mess, I'd be on FB. The only other option open to me is euthanasia or shipping.

I have had great luck with this drug and know several other trainers who keep it in their arsenal as a "tool"

You do you - try it for a few months you will know if it works or not

Like i said before the "best" method i found was every 2 weeks give the injection IM - keeps them from being a roller coaster

I too am in ur situation - i can only have 2 horses per the hubby and life - so i have what i have or they have to be sold and get another - and same im old and dont have time for all the BS

good luck - keep us posted

just to add - i have a new project in and she is 4 and is terrified of everything due to being beat down and having the **** used out of her and then not being taken care of - SO YES she is starting resperine for a full reset and to learn its ok and to chillax lol

Can Can have you tried those T.H.E calming cookies that Crystal sells? I feed them to a mini I have when he gets his feet done to help him relax sine he was a mess at one time, they do seem to help I know that dont work for everybody but ya never know untill you try.

You do what you feel you need to do, no judgement on my part, some horses need that little bit of help to learn life is not that bad.

Thank you teamthompson. Right now I'm giving .25 every 7 days. I'm thinking about upping the gelding to .3 weekly. These horses need to belong to a kid that wants to ride hours a day. They are most dangerous handling on ground.

Sounds as if you don't know any REAL PROFESSIONAL TRAINERS. Their trailers and tack rooms look like you stumbled into a Merck warehouse. It's great that you and your horse don't need Western medicine.

Have you asked the vet, who supplied you with the medication, about the dosage and instructions?

There are too many things here I would love to address, but I don't have the energy.

A friend of mine has a mare that sounds similar to yours.  She is on the powder reserpine.  Works great and better for her since is she is also a handful to give shots.

I guess my horse didn't need it- he went from Always being in the 1D to getting his first 3D check EVER!! I can't Wait for this to wear off. I even asked for an antidote???? it's like my gelding is totally tranquilized.

The friend who introduced me to Resperpine said her gelding is the same way on the 1cc per month shot, so she gives .5 every 2 weeks.

What did you give it for if you don't mind me asking? I have a horse that is spooky and on edge at all times. He's new to me, so I'm going to treat him for a few different things and see if consistent hauling will help. If not, I may try reserpine.
