Location: At The End of The Red Dirt Road | Okay dilemma time and I just can't decide what to do. In December, I was the winner of a free "barrel horse prospect" from BHN and Necessity. I think you can still access the picture & pedigree of the horse from that website. Anyway... this is a just turned 3 yr old black (registered paint) filly with a white blaze and a white sock. She is exactly 14 hh and doesn't weigh near enough, but has been filling out nicely since I have been feeding and worming her. She had obviously never been handled when I picked her up, but surprisingly is very willing to be caught anywhere and has been much gentler to be around than I expected. I think she was either a little premature at birth or just somewhat neglected, because she (not to knock anyones favorite breed) looked like an arabian when I picked her up. I am debating whether to sell or give her away and looking for suggestions. I refuse to give her to my father in law - which is my husbands suggestion. He has too many mares and I am tired of having to do his paperwork for him - plus his mares are qh and this would mean a whole new set of paperwork to register this mares colts in APHA and I am also one of those who adamantly oppose randomly breeding unproven mares. The reason I am talking myself out of keeping her is I have an old neck injury that is getting to the problem point where surgery may be the only option. I do fine on the broke horses and I am beyond careful not to get on anything that is too rough or might buck. Right now my youngest horses are 4 and as slow as I have to bring them along it is about all I can do to keep them on any schedule. The only promise I made when I accepted her was that she could not go to an auction - to make sure she does not end up in the killer pen. She is certainly too nice for that anyway - I think that she might eventually be a nice size for a kids horse or a horse for a smaller rider. Does anyone have any ideas of someone who might be able to use her? Maybe someone who has lost a horse and can't afford to replace it, a training program, 4-H program???? I just thought I might toss this out and see what kind of response I get. |

Location: Omaha, NE | Well what is her breeding like? I raise paints so maybe I can help you out there. Do you think she could actually be a barrel horse? If not then why not invest a little, have her trained up and prove herself some and then sell her off. She'll have a lot greater chance of finding a decent home that way. Esp being a breeding stock paint. People seem to think they are throw aways, when they have just a good of chance to throw you a nice colored colt as any mare with color herself. |

Location: Oklahoma | There is a boys' ranch where I live that takes donations of horses so that troubled boys can work with them, and you can take the price of the horse off your taxes for a donation (you would have to get an appraisal of its value from some "horse expert"...since you didn't buy it)....that might be an option....the name of the place is Calvary Boys' Ranch and it's in Eufaula, Oklahoma. It is a non-profit facility and the break and train the horses and then sell them to pay their expenses. |

Location: South Texas | I would contact someone with the 4-H Program and try to place her.....I grew up in a strong 4-H program and truly believe in it....I think it would be a great jesture on your part. KUDOS to you for trying to do the right thing and not just dump her in a mass breeding program. Who knows she might just be the spark that brings us a new world champion in the future, just because some kid got was able to get started with a horse. I applaud you....I just I hope I spelled it right...LOL

Location: You never know where I will show up...... | How about donating her to a local club, like a 4-H or FFA chapter, to be raffled off as a fundraiser? In 2003 I donated a yearling Paint filly to our local 4-H Horse club to raise money to build a new rodeo/riding arena in our town. The members sold the tickets for $5 each and made a lot of money off the raffle that was put towards the arena. The people that won the filly absolutely love her, she went to an awesome home. It was a good deal for everyone involved. |

Location: At The End of The Red Dirt Road | Her registered name is "Its Rainin Cash" by The Slicker and goes back to Mardelle Dixon in the 4th generation I believe. Bottom side is Miss Money Gale by a son of Dash For Cash with Mighty Deck and Bar None on the bottom of the mares side. Dianne -- that idea is a good one that I will look into for sure. The raffle idea is good too!

Location: At The End of The Red Dirt Road | Cissygirl - I guess to answer your question, I have 4 other "prospects" that all have at least 120 plus days of training on them (not prejudiced against paints because 2 of these are paint - 1 solid color) and I had truly decided that it is just not profitable (or fun at this stage in my life) to start completely green colts because at the rate I have to go because of this previous injury it takes me forever to get the rides in on them. I will likely continue to purchase prospects, but with the current horse market, I think it is more beneficial in my case to buy horses that are already well started - for example colts that have been to cutting or reining trainers that are not working out for those particular events. |

Location: At The End of The Red Dirt Road | Thought I better update this so everyone who has asked will know where I am at with it. I received a very interesting request to place her with a teenage girl who sounds very capable of starting her (sounds like she has a good support group) and is involved in 4H. She is currently riding an older horse and needs a future replacement. They are sending me references so I can make sure that it looks like she will work for them. I haven't definitely said yes yet, but unless something unforeseen pops up I am planning to give her the horse. Thank you all for your ideas -- I know its not every day that we have horses that we'd rather give away than sell, but I am really overwhelmed with the suggestions I got and the many people who would really like to have a chance to have a horse. So, if anyone else has one they are just letting waste away in the pasture - give this a try! |
