Here is my pet peeve.

The people who are irked by nobody's calling themselves barrel racers.

A true horse person is what we should all be aiming to be. A person who doesn't get their panties in a wad on the title one gives themselves.

A true horse person will instead of making snide blanket statements will help to promote education, constructive criticism, and positive reinforcement.

A true horse person will be there to lend a helping hand whenever it is needed.

Myself I barrel race, I have had 1d horses I have had 4d horses, not all horses have the ability to be 1d horses, who cares where someone places money is money, I am happy for my friends who kick my but, or for the friends who win money in the 3d.

I have also rodeod, I have placed, and won some buckles at amature rodeos, but honestly I don't like driving from one end of the country to the other in a weekend to run. I also don't like the ground at rodeos, I like nice manicured barrel races. I do admire the girls who have the stamina, and drive to rodeo, but I don't think of them (in general) any more then the people who just jackpot.

I have also gymkhaned, it takes a different mindset of a horse to do all 4-5 events, it takes a different style of training to achieve this mindset. I also admire these people who go out try their hardest, and I have friends who would rather gymkhana then rodeo or jackpot as it is a more family oriented environment, their horses have won at rodeos and jackpots.

Myself, I try to be the best barrel racer I can be, I love the training and futuriting the young ones, I still try and go to a clinic each year to improve my skills, I sit on the side lines and analyze other people's runs.

I also try and be the best horsewoman I can be, I ride with my friend who is a cutter, he laughs at me when I try to work the mechanical cow in my barrel saddle, I have kissed my horses neck many times, lol. I am constantly trying to attend lectures, seminars, demos to improve my knowledge.

I also want to add my mother can critique a barrel run with the best of them, she has never barrel raced, but drove me to my first clinic when I was 9, she has observed many clinicians. I still thank her for her tireless effort to get me to where I am today, and I applaud all the other parents doing the same thing, I do not think less of you for not turning a barrel.

For the people who are irked by self proclaimed barrel racers, get over it, if they have something to say be respectful, keep an open mind, you may learn something

Coug - 2014-05-31 1:20 PM I don't particularly like being called an idiot. More over, who are you to be calling people like me idiots??? I've not run for many years. I'm doing it now. That's the key. I'm getting out there and doing it. I have no aspirations of going down the rodeo road. I'm quite content going to jackpots. Call me an idiot if you will. I'll keep my opinion of you to myself.

I'll be an Idiot with you.

Cheryl made some excellent points.

The highlighted part is my Dad to a T...never turned a barrel in his life & the only time he's even been on a barrel horse was a couple of times he rode one of mine around the pasture.  But he's watched & studied a lot of the greats right alongside me, and he has always filmed my runs & critiqued them with me.  He can spot stuff that happens during a run like nobody's business...

Same as my husband!  He is much more observant than I am and I value his feedback highly even though he only rides once or twice a year - when I pretty much have to make him! - and, I will say he has a great eye for lameness and movement, he picked up a barely grade 1 lameness (confirmed by my vet) and I couldn't see it all.  He has driven me many miles to barrel races, watched people warm up and run when I'm focused on myself and my horse - I would venture to say he's seen more runs than I have, yet he didn't grow up with horses and didn't own one until he "adopted" mine when we got married.

When you are watching the NFR on TV and you involuntarily turn to look for the next barrel in your chair in the living room -Β you are/were a barrel racer.Β

.......or when you are driving down the highway where the speed limit is 55, and you are daydreaming of making a scalding run, and you lean forward and glance down to see you are going 90 mph.......you are a barrel racer.

Or when you smootch to the truck to make it go faster instead of pushing the gas peddle lol

Phxbarrel - 2014-05-30 9:24 AMΒ  >.< . In my opinion, a 'barrel racer' is someone who pro rodeos or rodeos and actually wins money and perhaps that is their main source of keeping a float during rodeo season... A person who barrel races is anyone who competes in the sport, perhaps as a hobby, doing jackpots and maybe even has pro rodeo aspirations, but hasn't hit the big leagues yet.

Β Seriously????? I know lots of "jackpot" BARREL RACERS that could hold their own IF they chose to haul and compete in rodeos. And I guess all of the "men" fall into the "person who barrel races"......

And this comment is just plain asinine and RUDE.......

Any idiot with a 4D horse can do that
Β

Ditto! Your a " barrel racer"?? The barrel racers I know handle themselves 100 times better then you ever will! Your the kind of person I don't want to be associated with! I must be an idiot then because my horse is a 4d barrel horse and a CHAMPION playday horse. I have conpeted on him 4 out of the 6 yrs i've had him and in 4 yrs he has won me a halter, winter blanket, 3 buckles and a saddle. Show me an idiot that can do that! I don't run in the 1d but I can ride with the best of them. I train horses and the proof is in my training. I know that I am a CHAMPION do I go around telling people that NO. I haven't been to a rodeo since '07 but that doesn't mean I'm not a barrel racer.

If you can't tell I am VERY offened.

I'm just a used to be. Still have horses but have not competed in a barrel race for four years. This type of attitude is one of the reasons I no longer compete.

I'm a has been Maclay Medal/equitation competitor and Working Hunter Champion who is a wanna be barrel racer. And although I technically suck at barrel racing so far because my times aren't fast and I am still trying to get the pattern perfect, I DO call myself a barrel racer. Why? Because I have wholeheartedly dedicated myself to learning all about this event, training for it, and winning at it in whatever D I can. I plan to be that stealthy adversary that no one pays attention to until it's the end of the year and I am way up there in the rankings, whether it be from smoking hot runs or flat out consistency without hitting barrels or taking a tour of the arena when I go.

I honestly can't say that I care if someone calls me a barrel racer or a poser, while you are discussing me...I will be out in the arena training my horses. Like Cheryl said...we should all be focusing on becoming better horsemen, whether it is doing cowboy dressage or practicing the pattern, starting colts or tuning on the ones that need a bit of a refresher. I am proud of my accomplishments in the 2 years I have been doing gymkhana and barrel racing...and that's really all that matters.

I think everyone has an opinion of what classifies one to be a barrel racer - in todays world of playdays, jackpots and rodeos there are many who compete at all levels - and thousands upon thousands of different calibar of horses.
In response to the original poster - I myself know of a gal that has never in her life ran barrels but her facebook used to state she was a professional barrel racer and lived to run barrels - she is a novice rider and if she tried to run barrels wouldn't get off a trot - yet will talk down to others because she is "PRO"

As for me - I've won some nicer things back in the day - 20+ years - two kids and many health issues ago -
Last year I was able to compete again - it is flat out amazing how catty and rude people are!!! Ok? So I am 40? And not winning 1st place and so I've gained some middle age weight? Why is that your problem??? I ride and run barrels for MY PERSONAL satisfaction - no one elses right? But wow! I heard so many people say things like my horse should be riding me so I don't break his back? I mean I am NOT that fat people! But its the 20 something 95 pounders saying it ??? I hope they get fat when they are 35! LOL (not really

I'm sorry you had such nasty attitudes meeting you at the jackpots.  There always has to be a few jerks to ruin it.  Keep your head up, keep on running and enjoying yourself.

Those girls don't have any raising and I bet they will pay for that arrogance one day.  I know where you're coming from tho. I was out for 7 years and started back last year after 2 kids and some serious health issues of my own. I will never be the rider I was, and my horse and I have had some struggles. Half the people going anymore have no idea who I am or what I won back in the day.  I don't care. I'm back going and having fun even if we suck a good half of the time. LOL
