I have been thinking alot about this very thing lately.  I will be 49 in a few weeks and I decided the things I regretted the most were the things I was to afraid to do so I didn't do. I spent years with my daughter doing her barrel racing thing and I always wanted to do something with horses- but didn't because of my many hundreds of reasons and excuses. So this spring I bought a very nice cutting bred little gelding and I have gotten into the EXCA Association for the cowboy extreme racing. I found a great trainer- in fact she just won the furturity championship on her horse just last weekend a the finals.  And this coming 2015- I am going to start competing.  My motto right now is Buckle or Cookie!!  I want to lose 20 lbs by March 14th.  Everyone is giving me a hard time and trying to feed me but I don't care. Cause I shall be wearing my very own shiny new buckle by Oct 2015.  I even made myself up alittle EXCA Buckle Clip art and a chocolate chip cookie little banner thing to remind me of the goal daily.  And I made myself a little quote to hang up as well.  "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams for they have already come true and are waiting for you to claim them." Some of it I stole and just added my own thoughts to it. So many times we tell ourselves all kinds of crazy things about why we can't do something. Well I am telling myself all kinds of crazy ideas why I can do it.  Cause I am doing it.  I have also read some really great books lately by Jane Savoire and a couple of other authors that are just as wonderful.  Life is WAY TO SHORT- and we don't have any idea what time is left.  I have spent way to many years wishing and dreaming so I am spending the rest of what is left DOING..  Because why not??

I feel the same way- someone could else could probably do better with my big goober of a gelding-

but I like running him, so off I run :) We can improve together, and he's taught me a lot.

Hey your doing better than me. I'm still cantering!!

livinonlove&horses - 2014-11-06 10:57 AM well miss Jen I am going for IT! And I'm scared and it's requiring some kicking me in the but by myself but I'm doing it! Finances changed for the better for us recently which means my husband no longer farms and is around to help with our kids. Which means this chick is getting back into barrel racing after a 10 yr break. So what did I do? Get a 3D horse and ease back into things. Heck NO!! I bought an own daughter of FG trained by a futirity rider, that is still futirity eligible. Last week I mailed off my Diamonds and Dirt entry form!! Did I mention I have never rode in a barrel race out of state let alone a futirity? I was a 1D rider back in high school eons ago. My horse is way underjockied as the moment! But I've got the plan. In riding and getting better. Lost 10 of the 50 lbs I want to loose. So come March I will either be happy with things or the laughing stock of D&D. Either way I'm going for it! But yeah I'm scared to death!
HECK YA!  That is awesome!  I wish you all the success in the world in the futurities an beyond!  My colt with be at D & D but I won't be jockeying him.  With my work schedule i'm not able to take off as i'd need to in order to get to the futurities nor could I get him the places he needed to be to season him, so I decided to send mine off 3 weeks ago to season.  Got a text today that he ran 3 tenths off the horse that won the 1D at a jackpot so I think I made the right decision.  Gunnar can give him the opportunity I couldn't and get him places he needs to go.  I'm pretty excited about the future with these two and hope Ricky doesn't decide to be Richard when the money is on the line.  LOL

Maybe if I get down to D & D at least over the weekend we can meet up!

My mare would probably been better off being jockied by someone else but I like running barrels so didn't see much fun in that. I have the time and means just maybe not the skill but it's more of a bucket list/experience thing for me. Meet new people and overcome some of my fears. I get anxiety hauling new places all by myself. I made the 9 hr haul to get my new horse all by myself though!  Good luck with Ricky!
I'm jealous!  I wish I could have done this too but just no way.  I used to have a futurity horse every year that I had raised and trained and would haul and then sell as a later 4 or 5 YO.  I haven't been able to run one at a futurity since 2004 and I miss it!  But my job doens't allow me to take off the week at a time to go to the futurities, so I shall live vicariously through you and my colt!  So excited for you and hope to see you in many short gos!  You're my hero and i'm pulling for ya!  Until I can quit my job and ride for living (BLAHAHAHAHAHAHA) i'm going to be stuck letting someone else jockey the one i've trained.
Well at least you have the skills! I rode the same horse for 9 yrs. and then got married had kids college and stuff so I retired her. I haven't rode 50 different horses so I don't feel like I have the experience. But I love to learn! I hope you get to get back at it. I'm sure sitting on the side line is hard when you know how to play the game. I'll pray things work out so you can come show me how it's done!!

Well I hope it's you showing me the ropes.  Gonna be a fun year no matter what happens.  I'm so proud you posted and proud you're doing this!  I look forward to meeting you hopefully at D & D and maybe LRQHS and lindseylou can come join us!  Yay for 2015!!!!!!

What am I waiting for?? My gelding to get better.... it's been a very disheartening year, but I have to keep telling myself that I've done more these past six months than I did for the last seven years that I wasn't riding.. and certainly learned more this year than I ever did all those early years combined! I only got to make about 10-12 competition runs in the little time that I had on my gelding and we were just starting to get together, but I knew something was off and we finally found it at the vet. Horses are the one aspect of my life that I can always stay positive in... I might go to the barn and bawl my eyes out sometimes, but I know that he'll be back and we'll eventually get together. I just have to keep reminding myself to not get caught up comparing myself to anyone else.

All I really wanted for this year was to be able to get eight BBRs in so I can attend the world finals next April. I accomplished that goal and also set out to win a bonus qualifier on a whim.. and it happened! I know that was God's way of showing me that I need to just suck it up, stick with it and know this time will pass faster than I think it will.... who knows. Maybe I'll even be feeling good enough to fill out that entry form to the Bonus Race Finals while I'm waiting!

I was not going to reply to this other then tell others they can do it, but here goes.  I too started over, at over age 50.  I got a really nice horse and then he got EPM.  I had not been on a barrel horse since I was 21.  Long time off.  So, I have had to start over with my husband's reject cutter and a broodmare that we had.  This year (2014), I decided to set a goal and go for it.  I had sold my babies I raised because I knew that I was not capable of riding them.  So, these last two I have kept.  I have said do or die.  I joined a small riding club that had a straight payout.  This year I won an average at a Pac West Race (4D), and I was second for the year in both barrels and poles.  It has made me realize, maybe  I can do this again.  So, anyone thinking 57 is too old think again.  Because this old lady is going to ride her horses or die trying.

mtcanchazer - 2014-11-06 11:39 AM LRQHS, I love you! Well, I love your post any ways, LOL. Thank you so much for posting, just what I needed to hear! I love motivational posts.

BTW, Bingo, may I just say don't feel bad about the house loan process. My parents have gone through this lately with a refinanc, and it is a mess anymore. There is no winning I swear as my parents have good credit. My folks were approved, but the appraiser gave a way low end appraisal (between 60-70% of what our house is actually worth if we went to sell it today) so they ended up not refinancing. Oh well, c'est la vie. And if you are me, la vie en rose!
I love you too, little buddy :

Should I be afraid??? LOL

Actually, your post gave me some more motivation on my colt...not that I didn't have any, but sometimes when I get to thinking about all the training it seems overbearing, but when I get someone that basically says " You can do it!" it makes me a whole lot more confident. One of my favorite sayings is from Henry Ford, "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right."

This is so cool and what I love about owning and having horses.. It doesn't matter how old you are.... you can do it.  We have a lady in late 50's or early 60's that asked if she could start coming and join in our lessons that a friend and I are taking for the EXCA stuff.. She is amazing.  She has severe rhumtoid arthritis.  Some days, she hurts so bad you can tell that it is not a good day.  She has a wonderful horse and he helps her out.. Well most days. Sometimes he's a stinker.  She has set some great goals as well to start competing in the ride smart age group and will start competing in the spring.  Hey, I figure if she can endure I can perservere.  She's such an inspiration.  We have told her this, but I don't think she really realizes how much we truly mean it.  Her hands are so gnarled that she can hardly hold the reins, but she comes ready to ride.  We love her!  So... I think it's AWESOME what you have accomplished.  and it exciting.  SO CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR WINNINGS!

livinonlove&horses - 2014-11-06 10:57 AM well miss Jen I am going for IT!

It is going to be a fun year! A big transformation for me! I've been a stay at home mom for the last 10 yrs. now I will be on the road on and off with me horse. Leaving my husband home with my kids. Yikes!!! Would be so cool if I got to meet some of you guys!!!!!

That is great and exciting.LOVE TRANSFORMATIONS!!!   GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN! Sounds like you have a great and supportive husband, and that is a treasure for sure.  I don't know what i would do without mine.  I am so excited for next year myself.  I can't hardly believe how everything has come together. LIFE IS EXCITING....

Consider me inspired guys. I came home at almost dark and put 15 minutes of riding on El Scorcho. I've smiled at the stories you've told all day. You know, we could be a mighty force of positive if we combined forces :) I'm seeing a D and D trip I'm my future. Don't be shocked when I walk up behind you and bear hug your butt :)

I LOVE this thread! I have only mildly played with my horse since I started a thread awhile back about getting motivated again. I am stretched thin on a regular basis and never seem to make the time. I have however started to make the time to get myself in shape again and am seeing the rewards of that now. I am hoping it will bleed over. So my partners in crime. Here goes:

I have a really nice mare that acts like such a booger on the ground sometimes that it is too much work to get her saddled and ridden. I entertain the idea of selling her because she isn't the escape I need right now. I have a one year old daughter, and two pre-teen boys whom I home school and my fiance is gone for two weeks at a time, so I am the only and only around here.. When he is home our time is usually spent catching up, running errands, and allowing him time to play so I get no relief from the baby yet. I would love to go grab my horse and get her saddled without putting in more effort to do that than to actually ride. Why have I not sold her? Hard to market a mare like this when I can't invest the time to get her to a point where I can sell her. Also, she is so nice to ride. Super smooth and is the same way on the pattern. I think she is going to be awesome when finished. She just cruises right now and will turn on speed if asked so she is a good fit in that sense while I get going again. So lately I have been pulling her out, tying her up, brushing her, and then leaving her on the trailer. Sometimes I work her on the ground if I have the time. I figure this is better than just leaving her to sit in the pen. My fiance is supposed to get her ridden down a little for me so I can take over when he leaves, but that hasn't happened yet. Sigh. I miss the days of getting to ride when I want.

I have no idea where that tangent was supposed to go, but there it is ladies. My current situation and obstacles. I want to get her legged back up to hit some jackpots down south this winter and get ready to hit some amateur/open rodeos next summer or fall. Is there hope for me? Somebody please kick me in the ass. Mail me a timeout button so I can pause time when needed, I could use a solid nap right now. Ok. Headed outside to catch her up and tie her to the trailer for a bit. Thanks for listening!
