Here are some facts for people who are saying this is just like the flu... It's not. I copied this from a dental hygiene page I belong to. It's a great read explaining why it's a threat and why it's such a different cat. Last Monday I was taken back by a lady that wouldn't shake my hand... By Friday my Outlook was changing as new information unfolded. Today my office was shut down for a week for protection and longer if needed. Let's say my veiw of the seriousness of this has changed largely. It's not just hype. I only respect articles that are lead by science not the Media...

Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand...

It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics.

Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.

Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity.. the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off.

Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens..we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be..

H1N1 was deadly....but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.

Fast forward.

Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”

This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it.

And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs..

That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.

We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.

Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...

And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next.

Be smart folks... acting like you’re unafraid is so not sexy right now.

#flattenthecurve. Stay home folks... and share this to those that just are not catching on.

Has anybody out there in BHW ever wondered if the opening of ancient tombs, a favorite pastime for archaeologists, couldn't be releasing diseases to both animals and humans.  They've found bags of grain that will still grow if planted, so why not the germs from the bodies of folks who may have died thousands of years ago from the diseases plagueing us today.

I'm trying to stay out of stores & stuff as much as I can, but because I don't want to freak people out. I sniffle and sneeze and am congested 365 days a year becuase I'm incredibly allergic to all types of hay. It just my life now & as long as I have horses. But people are going to think I'm sick. But also might keep people to keep their diatance if I do go out. Practice a little sniffling and people will move their 6 feet away lol

I'm just absolutely upset and beside myself this morning ... after talking to my daughter last night, she went on with her father, against my wishes to Dallas to a large motorcycle race with well over 1000 people present for a week long race. She is 15... I told her to please take this threat seriously and try to keep your distance, wash your hands and use hand sanitizer if your dad has it. She blew me off, laughed... told me to quit buying into the hype. Sounds like her idiot father talking. I told her there is most likely going to be a lockdown she says they cant make you stay home mom relax.... what?! I feel like I have failed her as a parent shes so careless right now. I said I had hoped her father stocked up on groceries at his home because when they get back next week we dont know what's going to be going on. She laughed at me and smart butt said she would just stay there longer because I'm losing it over this "crap". I'm just sad shes buying into her dads view. I cannot believe they are still doing this race. He went to play photographer and said he needed the money ... I couldn't care less had he gone but he needed to back me up and tell her she needed to stay home . I'm angry, sad and disappointed. Shes not coming home for at least 2 weeks after they return but now it may be longer .... I told her I wasnt panicking I'm trying to prepare and she needed to remember we have a high risk living here under our roof. We are taking this seriously.  My brother in California was laughing at all this last week, he finally had to go to the store, hes not laughing anymore ... it finally hit him ... it's real. He took video inside his local store and it was completely empty. My husband is a truck driver and is having difficulty making deliveries to his normal stores because they are not letting drivers in until later to make room for food deliveries.... he delivers batteries, Sam's club and Walmart is a major customer. Napa is talking about closing down for a few weeks ... if that happens my husband will be home, not working. This effects EVERYONE in one way or another....I'm all about going into a lockdown so we can slow or stop the spread of this... the sooner the better .. so we can get back to normal everyday life!

I went back to the store today for a few items.  In just over 24 hours our local grocery store is almost sold out. It felt like the Twilight Zone there.  I guess I should of bought toilet paper yesterday when I had the chance but it was 7 bucks for a small roll!

So, pretty sure all the kids in town were outside wandering the neighborhoods & playing when I went to lunch today. My mom said the kids next door currently have between 20-30 of them gathered riding 4 wheelers, dirt bikes, & playing games. So I suppose taking them out of school was a moot point & they're really just enjoying a long spring break. As far as restaurants go, you can't sit and eat but you can go in and grab carry out. So like Jimmy Johns, Pizza places, things like that you can go in and pick up your food. Or like Jimmy Johns you can go in & order & wait while they make & then take it home. Not really sure how thats all that much effective, when everyones already touched the doors and counters at that point. There's still 150 people at walmart at one time. Seems like people are jsut out & about more than they were before, so at what point does this "social distancing" start to work lol

I got the last box of Orville's naturals popcorn yesterday. I was so glad to find it. I love my popcorn. I have a stash of the mini bags in my desk. I can send you some if you're desperate

Texas Roadhouse shut down today for anything but carryout.  Trying to figure out how cold everything would be after a 20 minute drive.

I only go for the rolls and they are just the same reheated lol. I'm hoping a lot of the small restaurants can figure out how to offer a curbside or carryout. Because here in IL you can still walk in and get your food, you're not banned from entering the building. That would help some of them out and at least keep a few people employed for some hours.

I'm taking this time to eat the foods I have at home that I've had in the freezer for forever. I inadvertently prepared for this as whenever certain frozen veggies or fruits are on sale I buy 2 bags, etc. I cook for 1 so I have meals frozen. Asked my mom for a trip to costco for christmas and my birthday last month where she lets me fill a cart with whatever. Toilet paper and paper towels are always my first go-to, just because I'm always broke lol. So I somehow managed tos tock myself for this without trying or knowing it was coming. I'm just annoyed that our Subway won't let you walk in and order like Jimmy Johns down the street. I go to Subway every tuesday and when I walk in the door my sandwich is already in the toaster bc he saw me pull in. I just want my normal subway, like it would have been nice to be able to keep one normal thing. Especially since I'm payroll/accounts payable/hr at my job so I'm doing all my normal stuff plus coming up with our various plans of actions & getting people set up for home working. That subway is like my cigarette break. I was hoping my barn would shut the lesson program down and I could have the arena to myself, but they're going unless they're mandated to shut down too

My hubby went to HEB since there was no line when he got in from work... but there was also bare shelves. He was able to get 2 gallons of milk.. there are zero canned goods. He went over to Sam's club ... same scenario there. He was able to get a case of water but he said there was police officers standing in front of the water monitoring everyone..... here we go.... I'm done with trying to get stuff... we should have enough to last at least a few weeks in pantry and freezer... if not I'll go early in the morning and stand in line with all the others .. they let 20 in at a time in the mornings

I just ran to Smith's (Kroger) to pick up cat food. I ran in for a drink and they had milk & eggs so I grabbed 3 gallons of milk and an 18 pack of eggs.

Still no TP, paper towels, or hand sanitizer. They had milano cookies and shrimp cocktail so I grabbed some of those. . . I'd be one to gain 100 pounds if I was quarantined. . .

Ironically,  I was geared up to start this fun little 3 day detox this week but since the stores are out of pretty much everything, I've had to postpone that lol! At Sam's my husband grabbed the last 8pk of velveeta shells & cheese box and a 15 pack of trident cinnamon gum (my favorite) .... oh and a 12 ok of canned green beans baby!! Mac n cheese and green beans it is! I hope the day we get to look back on this and shake our heads is near

Thanks, Frodo. Now I'm going to have nightmares. But instead of those freaky flesh eating beetle things on "The Mummy" it'll be disease I'll be dreaming about.

Not sure which is scarier. Ancient, unknown diseases, or flesh eating beetles.

to me  and i am just a grey old lady but the numbers do not add up this is from cdc  how many billion people in the world

and this is it

Cases of the new coronavirus, COVID-19, have soared past 169,000, including more than 6,500 deaths, across 148 countries, while more than 77,000 people have recovered, according to a map of the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University.
The outbreak continues in the U.S., where President Donald Trump declared a state of national emergency and the total cases have risen to more than 3,770. Several states have enforced stricter precautionary measures to combat the spread, including the closure of schools, restaurants and bars in various parts of the country.
Similar measures have been expanded in Spain, France and Italy, where cases continue to spike, with Italy recording the highest surge in deaths within 24 hours, reporting nearly 398 new fatalities in the last day, BBC reports.
There are nearly 81,000 infections in China, including at least 3,000 deaths. More than 55,000 in the country have also recovered from the virus. For the first time, the combined total number of infections outside China has surpassed those within, reaching more than 87,000, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University on Monday.

Nearly 11,000 new cases have been reported across the globe, including first cases within at least seven African countries, as well as in Europe and the Americas region, in the past couple of days, according to the latest report by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The graphic below, provided by Statista, illustrates the recovery curve compared to the infection curve of the virus.
