The funny thing with the couch pictures is my daughter knows I have a rule that no dogs (except my heeler of course) get to go in the living room. We can block it off so they stay in the kitchen or entry way but that's it. One day she sent me those pictures when I was at work and thought her dogs were sooooo cute....I said, Um Emily, why are they in the living room? She really stuttered and stammered and then said, but mom they're so tired! She was busted. |

Location: Washington. (The DRY side.) | If you want something that will "stay with you" when you are "out on the farm", you might want to consider another breed. Catahoulas ARE hunting/working dogs. But not in the sense of say your typical herding dog. (which generally tend to stick close naturally) They are more like a hound. I'm not saying you can't teach one to "stick around", but there's ARE breeds that are easier to teach to not take off "hunting" whenever the mood strikes! I felt like I was banging my head against a wall for YEARS when I was teaching my female Catahoula to stick around. I was/am used to German Shepherds which are more of the "stick around naturally" type. |

Location: TN | We have a male Catahoula and a mixed Catahoula Doberman female. We adopted the female as a pup from Catahoula rescue and got the male when he was 2 from a friend who bought him at a breeder (we got him because the guy was tired of him bothering his cattle in the field). They are both super protective, loving, loyal, obedient (until they're hot on a cow when you're wild cow catching), and good with our small dogs. However, they both have a tendency to fight with strange dogs. We absolutely LOVE them as our children and can't imagine not having them. If you get one be aware that protectiveness and aggressiveness could be an issue. |

| My houla sticks around...okaaaayyy. lol. She bails and goes hunting, then comes back to 'check' on me. If you are riding and she is on one side of the horse and something catches her nose.. she crosses over on instinct.. she has been ran over a time or two lol!.
Mine is in the house all day and is fine with it. Except..dont expect to come home and sit on the couch.. she will stand in front of the tv and bark at you, come and smack you with her paw, or stuff her head right in front of your face... if she had to behave and stay still all day.. you are playing with her and getting her out when you get home! They are NOT a lazy persons dog by any means, they keep you active and going!
She is two in this picture. I got her from Missouri. Her mother was from Cats Cradle Catahoulas in Ontario, and her father from Florida. I had her flown to Seattle and drove down to pick her up. It was very scary for her and not sure I would do that again though.

| We have a female that will be a year in January. When she is good she is great, but she is still in the pain in a$$ a lot of times!! And we still have a weekly coming to Jesus meeting!! She ran our other dog to the neghbors house when she finally decided she wanted to be the dominate. As far as sticking around she is pretty good, but I have caught her going to the neghbors house a time or two, and will follow me down the road if I have to leave her home. She was scared to death to come in the house when we first got her (at 4 months old) but now she is all about it!! And is GREAT with the kids!! As far as sticking around she will wonder a little if it's just me, but she stays real close to and watches the kids if they r outside!! I'm about ready to send her to a cow dog trainer to get her a JOB cuz she is at the point that she really needs one!! Lol!! Love her and wouldn't trade her for the world!! But the next one I get will for sure b a little bity puppy not a 4 month old!! |

Location: Central Texas | If you are having trouble finding a breeder closer, contact the National Association of Louisiana Catahoulas to find out if there is a registred breeder close to you. Also check out Monday's Dogs on Facebook. They are based in Texas, but they post pics of Catahoulas all over the US that need rescuing. I think I have seen some on the eastern coast.
I agree with what most people have said about them. I work 12 hour shifts three days a week and my boy has to stay inside, but when I get home he gets to go run and "hunt" in the wooded area behind my house. I have one and my brother has four (three are hog dogs and one is a retired hog dog). |

Location: Qld Australia | As someone said, you have to remember that they are hunting/working dogs. We have four and have just purchased a very expensive female from the most reputable breeder in Australia. He actually is in the States right now on another research trip.
We have had no worries with them with aggression at all; we run a lot of dogs and they have to be able to handle that. My husband is alpha though without a doubt but we have never had a Cat even think about challenging this situation.
The female we have just bought is a Red Leopard, she is a really pretty yellow type colour, the other two females are Blue Leopard and the male is a black with tan points.
We run hunting dogs as I said and these dogs have proved very loyal and I find them more likely to stay 'constantly' with you than German Short Haired Pointers or Staghounds. The GPS and Stags will cast about and then come back to 'check' you. The Cat and Bull Arabs do this also; I just find that the GPS and Stags will range away that little bit further and the GPS are more likely to be more heedless when doing this. Don't get me wrong, they have a hot nose and use it, but GPS tend to be more heedless than a Cat in that respect.
Our dogs get plated up for hunts (hunting pigs) for protection and they don't tend to cast around and leave just looking for a hunt like GPS tend to do. In saying all this, if I had to have just ONE hunting dog, I would tend to lean toward the Stag; just because the few we have had anything to do with are suck sweet, loyal, beautiful dogs. Plus I love hairy dogs!!
As puppies we have found with Cats that it is hard to walk anywhere as you are forever tripping over you new best friend lol. I find them similar in temperament to Bull Arabs - ours tend to know when they are allowed to think about hunting and when they are expected to be just dogs.
Sorry about the novel lol!!

Location: Missouri | Had to come back with a few pics of my pride and joy (and daughter's too LOL). I love seeing everyone's pics and reading about their Cats.
I definitely agree with the statement about knowing when to work. Ruger is the biggest momma's boy going, til it's time to go to work. When he gets in the zone, he is all business. His parents are both top catch dogs. I have to admit, I'm too much a chicken to let him do much with cattle (only with a few bunches who I know won't get too hateful). He is fabulous at helping when daughter's yearling filly gets out..I can tell him to get ahead, and he is ON IT.
Truly can't say enough good about these dogs, provided you handle them right. They are NOT like most dogs for sure. Totally different mindset. Ours don't really roam - other than my pasture, but if I yell COME HERE...they are booking for me. Ours are shock collar trained - for us that works the best. They know I can get ahold of them, even if I'm not in reach. LOL
Love my Ruger to death - he's my third child, companion, and protector. He has a lot of cool quirks (like if my phone keeps going off late at night, he will either growl/grumble at it, or just get up and take it to another room!
