Location: Kansas | ill ask one of the girls i know who breeds. She uses a program where she got a 30 day free trial. She liked it so much she bought it. It tracked everything for each horse and also allowed extended pedigree and you just clicked on a tab for each horse and it showed everything. Ill ask her what it was called |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I've been trying out the Rendaivu. It is pretty neat. Takes a long time to enter everyone, but I think it will be great for tax reasons. I can list who gets dewormed with what, when, cost...vet expenses, etc etc, breeding, purchases/sales and then print them off in reports so I know who is costing what. We have a couple older horses that cost more to feed, they are not and have never been for sale so they are not part of the breeding business/expense. Great way to keep track of everything. |

Sorry if someone did and I missed it. . . I even looked.
I've never used it and don't know a thing about it. A friend is looking into it for her cattle - they have lots of species editions - and I noticed they had a horse edition so I thought I'd post it.
As for using Excel, there is very, very little you can't do with it. That doesn't mean it is always the best choice, of course. Most of the other software is a database of some sort and of course you could build exactly what you wanted in Access too. Excel works fine as a flat database - everything is in one list of information. If you need relational information accumulation - information collected from different lists - then you need a relational database like Access. You might, at that point, want to go with some sort of canned equine management software if you really want to collect and input all that information.
My theory about data is only collect that which makes you able to make better decisions. Sometimes that means lots of great detailed information and sometimes it doesn't. If you end up with a system that is over-kill for your information needs, you may find it hard to keep up with it after the new wears off. At least that's what I've seen over the years.
For example, we don't have a ton of horses. We rarely have more than 30 at a time - so this isn't like tracking information for the 6666's or something. I need to know that, for example, the date we last wormed so we can figure out the date to do it again. That's the decision I need to make. I don't need to enter that in each horse's record - for me that is overkill.
If you want to make a list of all your horses and what was done on what date - like worm, vaccinate, even breeding and foaling, Excel will let you get that back very easily using filers over Pivot Tables. Pedigrees would be harder - that starts to get you into that relational database stuff because you'd have one table for horse information and a different table/list for procedures.
One reason I ask about Excel is to get people to think about how much information you need and are willing to keep. Also, most people find it easy to use once they get to using it regularly. And it is so very, very flexible that learning it gives you a generally useful skill you'll use for lots of other things too. And, it's not going to go away. I get calls from people that have used software they really liked that can't go on their new computer - hate those calls because I can't help. Small vertical software companies go belly up all the time. Excel won't go away anytime soon.
Not trying to talk you out of equine specific software - just suggestions to think about.

I don't know what its called, but the one the Royal Vista Southwest developed that Jud Little uses is AWESOME! Email Allison Bailey at Royal Vista and she can probably tell you what its called and who makes it.
This is called WiseOption. I have used it at multiple ranches I've worked for and it is awesome. It is definitely set up for equine operations, not cattle. |
