Horses before the NFR - 75-100,000Β  I'd say.

Horses after the NFR - 150-250,000Β  or more depeding on rounds won etc.

Or in Stingray's case - PRICELESSΒ

What did Hot Shot sell to Steinhoff's for after he went to the NFR??Β  Or did they buy him before that....I can't remember.

The quoted price on HotShot was indeed $80k. They did however buy him before his NFR appearance with Janet. The deal had already been made that Janet was running him and part of the deal was that they had to honor that.

One thing you have to keep in mind when asking about horse like Stingray or Martha vs a Louie or Duke is reproductive value.
I heard a RUMOR that a Martha embryo went to Brazile for 6 figures.

I have absolutely no idea if it is true, but the story I heard on more than one occasion isthat HotShot's asking price was $150,000 but that due to some stuff found on pre-purchase exam the final selling price ended up being $80.000.  And every bit of what I just wrote could be 100% non-true gossip!!!!

It is.  People love to gossip about horse deals,  Peyton made the deal with Steinhoffs on Hotshot prior to the NFR.  Janet did so well on him that Peyton could have asked more after the NFR, but she stuck to her deal and the rest is history.  For a horse with supposed soundness issues, he sure ran well for many years, LOL

If I had a horse of Stingray's caliber and didn't need the money, she wouldn't be for sale at any price. But if I did sell her for some reason, I would tell them they'd have to write me a blank check and that they'd better have a million or two in the account

Yes, I agree a mare should have a higher value. HOWEVER, you can clone the geldings, get a colt and stand the colt at stud. So, according to others that have cloned geldings, the gelding should be just as valuable.

Not trying to start another round of pro and con on cloning but this seems to be the new option for these phenom geldings. Personally, I would never breed to a stud clone because the gelding he was cloned from may or may not have been a phenom if it was left as a stud. Not to mention the gelding may or may not have a great set of papers.

I don't think anyone is sure what will happen with the reproductive value of a clone.  I do know they won't get any of my money.

As far as the value of an animal like Stingray, I had a mare worth way less than she is and she was not for sale for any price.  I have a feeling Sherry doesn't need the money.  So I would say priceless. Afterall her (Stingray's) nickname is "Precious".  lol

honestly...a horse is worth what someone is willing to pay. Some people out there have some pretty deep pockets! However to their owners... those horses may be priceless... not for sale no matter the price.

I love how that box says cats love it.  Um, did you tell the cat on the box that because I am pretty sure that is not a cat that is happy at the moment.
