awest - 2013-12-28 3:29 PM If I'm going to bother someone enough to go try their horse, I'm taking a trailer and buying the horse ONLY as long as the horse is what they said it is.  I'm not going to waste my time and someone elses if I'm not seriously going to write a check that day and take the horse home.  If I'm just sort of interested, I'll tell them so and if it works out for me to meet them somewhere and not inconvenience them.  I think its rude to ask someone to try their horse, use their time and money and then pass on the horse if it did everything they advertised.  Once I had someone ask me to haul a horse to an arena 2 hours away, she showed up with no trailer, rode my horse, he worked great, her husband rode him, they both loved him and then she offered me half my asking price.  I was mad, loaded up my horse, paid the rental on the arena and left.  Now that's a rude buyer.

What about someone who flies in to look at your horse?  Kinda hard to load one on an airplane.

i don't recall the last time i took a trailer to look at a horse.....just a checkbook or cash.....i can always go back or work something out if i want it.......and i guess i would never worry about ****ing a seller off if i didn't buy the horse right then or even if the horse was perfect and i wanted to look at some more.....or just think about it.....honestly, a seller shouldn't be ****ed of for agreeing to a bunch of demands.....that's on them......i can't figure out why some sellers think that if someone looks at their horse they should be obligated to buy for their trouble......

I don't even have a trailer. Never have. And I did have the horse delivered out of state. For a fee of course.

I finally had to sell  my little mare at an auction.  I set the researve quite high, and took time to meet the buyers just chatting.  The gal that bought her was the perfect fit.  I had tons of tire kickers, people showing up in open toed shoes, folks wanting their kids to have a pony ride, and many many no shows.  I finally peaked and went the auction route.  I wouldn't do that with any horse, but I wanted this one gone so I could find a better prospect.  Things worked out, so I can't complain.  I am looking now and finding sellers a wee bit hard to understand.  Who sells a horse with no shoes and the only place to ride is a hard pan arena.  I drove 3 hours with trailer in tow to find the horses nothing like advertised and that really ****ed me off.  It isn't easy, but when you find "the one" it is totally worth it. :)  Still waiting for "the one" to show up.  lol   It is like finding a "mate"  lol

Yes he is less than $5,000. I failed to mention both parties drove over 3 hours to look.
Also, I did tell the people it was too muddy here and that we'd be taking him to a local sandy arena. What I ment to say was it is a huge pain to get my trailer out for a non-buyer.
For a lesser priced horse I am not willing to spend hundreds hauling him here and there. If he was a higher priced horse it'd be different. But then your dealing with a whole different class of people.

I'm torn on this.  I have read horror stories from sellers, but I have heard just as bad stories from buyers.  There are a lot of junk/scam horse sellers out there.  Personally I think if I want to make a sale, I do what it takes.  I think good breders and trainers and sellers need to expect at least 50% nonpurchase contacts and low offers.

I can understand being insulted if a $20K horse for sale is offerred $2K, but other than that I don't really understand why people get mad.  Just say no thank you and move on.  It costs money to sell things, thats part of the price.  I have never bought a horse on the first "look" either.  I have always looked, maybe rode.  Watched someone else ride and think/pray.  Then I contact and meet or make offer.  I had 1 horse drugged.  If I had purchased on the first visit, I might never have known. I also do background research when available on the horse and the seller.

We have had threads on here about people making purchases too quick and getting swindeled.  So since I have bought more than I have sold I guess I see it from the buyers side.

cinch - 2013-12-28 12:29 PM For several reasons I decided to sell my 19 year old youth friendly horse. He's sound, healthy and has so much to give a kid. I have him priced at what I'd be willing to pay for a horse his age even though his knowledge is worth so much more.

First people show up with no trailer but bring their expert with them. Horse works perfect until expert gets on and she doesn't know how to cue a horse so he just kindof stands there not knowing what to do. But over all he rode good. They call back 2 days later and want to come back and set a day. They never show back up.

Second people show up with no trailer and also bring a expert. I had explained we'd need to go to the town arena as it is super muddy here. Not a problem except for the mud here which involves me getting my trailer out since they did not bring one (which tells me they are not a buyer) but the hardest part is getting my trailer back in when I get home. Plus, this cost me gas.

He rides even better for this little girl and their expert rode better than the first one. I really liked these people until Mom says they think it is good for girl to go around and get on different horses and they'd like to come ride him again. I told her I'd be happy to show him to a buyer but I didn't have time to just let people ride hm for free.

Third person has the gall to want me to bring him to them and they live out of state. Who does that?

Even though I don't need him and he's going to waste I'm ready to pull his shoes and just tell anyone else that he's not forsale or don't bother coming if your not bringing a trailer and money.

Wait for it, wait for it.......BAM - here comes the low ball offer.

I just bought a horse on the west coast and I live in OK.  It just happened to be down the road from my mom's so I flew out and had a visit with her and tried the horse.  Obviously didn't bring my trailer with me, and that didn't make me a tire kicker.

I rarely take a trailer when i go to look at a horse, prospect, finished, broodmare, whatever. Look first, if I like it, I put down a deposit and come back and get it. I have only taken a trailer with twice. Once was a local horse as a broodmare and she was so cheap I was pretty sure i was getting her no matter what, and i did and i've had 2 wonderful foals out of her and one on the way in 2014 =)

2nd time was going to NM to go look at a broodmare i was sure I was getting. I looked at 2 and did not get either, Then i regretted my decision and ended up getting them both!

Mostly i dont take my trailer because a Seller can talk and be just as much of a time waster as a buyer can.

I rarely EVER sell any of mine but several times I have used someone else to sell them for me - I just don't have an appetite for people not showing and wasting my time if they do show up. People who broker do it for a living and they are used to that CRAP.

I wouldn't waste my time with anyone that can't make up their mind the 1st ride... period... you either want him or stop wasting my time.
I will NOT haul a horse anywhere for someone to try either, been burned on several levels to get me where I am today lol...You either want him or you don't... price is what it is, poop or get off the pot...lol

I don't take a trailer either. Plus I have learned the value of riding at my place as well as theirs. I almost bought a horse that was gentle and rode like a dream, until I got him homr. I could hardly saddle him, he danced and snorted at the trailer. I decided that it was best not to get on. While bringing him back to his home the next day, he kicked dent marks into the back of my horse trailer. Was he a bad horse? Where the people selling him less than honest? I don't think that is the case. Some horses are comfortable at home, but a little more uncertain in strange surroundings. He was young, a 5 yr old that probably has not gotten all the wet saddle blankets he needed. I have tried many horses at my place because I live and ride alone. Most had problems riding out alone by cornfields and crp grass. I had one that just froze, I couldn't get him to move at all. I took him bavk too. I am not trying to waste anyone's time, but I have already been hurt by a horse that was not my match.

I never take a trailer when I go try horses. Often I have to fly to try horses. I go prepared to ride and my trainer/coach goes with me to ride the horses, too I have a vet lined up and on stand-by to do a vet check + x-rays if we like the horse after the ride. The owner knows this ahead of time. I am very clear that I am not bringing a trailer. I also show up with a list of questions and I am very clear that I do NOT want the horse saddled and standing there ready to step on. I want to see the horse standing the stall; I want to see him haltered, groomed, saddled, and warmed-up. It's a business deal, so I am very business-like and clear about my expectations and how I want it to "go down". I do not buy horses without seeing them in person and riding them and having a vet check that includes x-rays and blood work. That's my MO.

My guess would be that 99.9% of respondents are, not only not in business, you are not in the horse business. If you live in a world where you pay a dollar figure for whatever the seller is asking, or you expect to get your 'selling' price from a buyer or not go above and beyond to make a sell, you live in a dream world or as with horses, you just think you are profitable. True profit will keep you in business until you have to chase down the next customer. Some of the "cream" in any business can name their own price and expect to sell their service or product, but they are the .1%.

Just went and looked at a really nice mare yesterday.  She had no shoes on and the arena was hard pan.  She did what was asked but took a few miss steps, sore feet?  or did the bute wear off?  So I am going back if they are willing to shoe her.  Is that considered unreasonable?  After that ride if she rides sound, the vet will come and do flexion tests.  Does this make me a bad buyer?  Oh and I didn't take my trailer......

Again, he is NOT a high priced horse and I do not sell horses and will not make a profit. I think it's crazy for me to be expected to spend more money than I'm asking for the horse to haul him all over the place.
I have a arena away from home to show him in but why should I go to the trouble for someone that just wants to let their kid ride a horse? And we did go to the arena.  And we'll go back if they ever show up after making several appointments to come back.
I did let the kid, each time, do all the brushing and saddling. He was out in his paddock when they came. I did go out with them to halter him because I wasn't sure he would come right up to a stranger.
If they want to pay more than the purchase price they can either have a vet come here or for the gas money I'd take him to a vet reasonable distance away.
So far about all I haven't done is haul him to the person that wanted me to bring him out of state for them to try him.

I have contacted 2 different brokers. Seems neither have a market for a solid kids horse. I won't leave him just any where.

I've got a good one :)  Last week some people stopped by to visit.  The wife and the little girl were out looking at the horses.  I've got a big Slim weanling who is like a big dog and they were loving up on her and then I took them in the pen.  Before they left the husband asks Dan to price the PONY in the first pen as his wife just loved her

Not the same thing since your horse took bad steps and is unshod.
