Glad I'm not the only one!!! My husband videos for me and is like "really? What were you doing?" haha |

Its US baby!! Fix us, help the horse.
The other big help was the old cowboy I went to for cutting and reined cow horses lessons, I learned more about how a horse uses themselves and teaching them to rate from him than anyone. |

and listen to everyone screaming at you to do something, because they're probably right (like kicking, and you come out saying, "I WAS" then you look at the video and you're thinking you were temporarily paralyzed from the waist down.) |

| Stay calm and stay off his face. I use to be super heavy handed with my old mare. Sold her. Bought a super sensitive 4 year old and He has taught me to be light handed and if Im not, it shows in our runs. |

For all the haters. lol
I asked because she is hitting a lot of barrels, her words not mine. So waiting till her leg passes the barrel then asking is not working, because he is coming in dropped, meaning not rounded. She will hit it either coming in or leaving it. I would get this horse to shape up (think the shape of a cresent moon going into your turns) and get his ribs to stay up, when your leg is at the middle of the barrel ask him to start his turn, remember to keep his nose tilted ever so slightly to the direction in which your going, and keep that heel dug into his side reminding him not to drop in on that turn.
SO hopefully this clears things up. |

| The best runs we have are the ones where I keep my hands super calm and in their "box"(no flailing), and use my legs, my seat, and my voice to cue my horse. 90% of the time when I ride at home I focus on riding pretty much without my reins and my horse does everything as well as you could ever ask for- its when I get all excited and on his face that we run into issues. |

Location: Oklahoma | Just wanted to insert something here....the mind does not process the word no, not, etc. I want everyone to try something. Shut your eyes and don't think about a green bird. Do it now. ........
What did you think of as soon as you thought that? A green bird, right? That's because your mind does not process NOT....so when you are thinking something, always think about what you SHOULD do....instead of saying to yourself, "Don't lean", think "Sit up and stay in the middle" or instead of saying, "Don't turn till your leg gets past the barrel", tell yourself, "Get the horse's hip by". I tell myself this on my ratey horse all the way down the alley...."hip by, hip by" and chant that to myself.
Btw....if you have time to think what to do, you're going too slow. A really good run only gives you time to react, and it takes 30 times to create new muscle memory, so until you do something correctly for 30 days, it will not be automatic....that is why repetition is so important, and it is also why people come out and say, "WHY can't I remember to ______(fill in the blank)?" It's because they haven't practiced it for 30 days and when you're going fast, it has to be reaction, not thought.

If you start taking it too serious, you don't have fun. I want to have fun when I barrel race. Not just sit on my horse, I enjoy talking to people and meeting new friends. I'M HERE TO HAVE FUN!
I also pray before I run...rodeo or barrel race...doesn't matter I still pray |

^^^^Agreed!!!! Having fun is important. I think barrel racers put to much stress on the situation. If you have fun then you relax! |
