Our horses are divided in to four groups and each group has their own barn or shed. Honestly most of the time you look out and they are standing by the bale feeder. Are you hanging out in that new indoor arena during the cold? Not yet, lol! Between Christmas and the husband thinking we need to get all our windbreak up for the cows before we get to play in the barn. I'm looking forward to it though! Boy he's a party pooper.
He's got Taylee home today so hopefully they'll get a lot done today cause I think I'll be staying in the house this weekend! |

Poor girl. LOL I've got the tractor plugged in and will go out to give everyone fresh bales and clean some of the drifts out of the yard once I get the ambition up. I think the couch will be calling my name for the next few days too. |

| We pamper. All of our horses have good wind break, wear heavy water/wind proof blankets, and we keep round bales of straw out for them to cuddle up in when it gets crappy. We feed extra hay, and they munch on the straw a bit once they're done the hay. When the wind really gets going we put them in tie stalls in the barn (no heat) for the night to eat their supper and breakfast, and then turn them out again for the day to get some exercise (but they aren't usually very happy about it).
In your situation I'd say they're probably fine as long as they can get out of the wind, but the two who dont have as much shelter I would consider putting just a rain blanket on to keep them from getting a chill (while avoiding making them too hot) from any moisture and/or wind. |

You and I do about the identical thing with our horses. I have heavy PJ's on all mine too. |

Location: Southern Pennsylvania | *Note that this is all winter for our horses. (We own 3)
-They have 2 run in stalls ( one is large; other is average )
-Blanketed (600-1200D with 250-400 lining). Unless it is supposed to be warm that day we do not take them off. However, I do take them off multiple times a week to ride them.
-roundbale 24/7. Our horses are sissies. If they run out of hay they will run through the fence (within 2 hours) and find their own. :(
-running water; it is from a large ditch.

Honestly, it makes me worry way to much if they're not super pampered. I cant sleep if Im wondering if my ponies are warm enough so I just go right for overkill. |

Mine have a run in shelter to get out of the wind, fresh water with a heater in it, and a fresh new round bale. I don't blanket either. They are probably giving me death glares since the barn isn't done yet, but they are equipped to handle the weather. Up here in my neck of the woods with the wind chill factor the weather stations were saying it will feel like 40 below....
YUCK!
Mine will have tons of hay in front of them.....I will only keep my one horse blanketed, because I have kept him blanketed since I ride him so much still in the winter so he is easier to cool out.
I may give a few doses of electrolytes too-and carefully monitor the amount of water they are drinking. (I don't have heated water buckets, nor do I have insulated ones)
I have a cousin that lives near Cincy and he said the same thing. That is crazy!!! |

| A little OT, but I heard on the radio this morning that Minnesota (I think?) was colder than what NASA recorded on Mars yesterday (-40 degrees F)! |

| CYA Ranch - 2014-01-03 8:06 AM Our high on Monday is predicting -15 actual air temp with high winds. The lows will be -30's. I'll have mine in the barn. Everyone has their own feelings and opinions on this. I choose to baby mine. The wind is the killer. I hate the wind. I only have 9 horses so I have stalls for everyone.
Only NINE? - LOL - I would have a stroke if I had to deal with that many! I can do my chores in nothing flat in the mornings as I only have 2!
It WORRIES me too, when it gets this cold - I think I forget they ARE horses and they are (somewhat) used to the weather. They are saying wind chills here of -10 to -20 Sunday & Monday and that tends to scare me because we just aren't used to it being THAT cold here. I always throw gloves and a hat in the truck if I go anywhere - just in case. |

I wouldn't be surprised! I live about 15 minutes from the border and our high for Sunday and Monday is -15 with a low of -28. And that's not even counting windchill. |

You would be laughing and rolling your eyes at me. Our low last night was in the high 20's so of course I act like that is your kind of winters- heavy blankets, more hay than they could ever eat and up in stalls. Mine don't get the extremly thick winter coats like horses up north do and I try to keep their coats at a minimum. I have a race tomorrow and it is suppose to be sunny and high 60"s, if they get too thick a coat it is hard on them.
I don't know how you handle those winters every year. What do you do with your kids??? They bundle up and still go outside? Getting my kids out of the house was sometimes key to our existence. :) I would have gone Joan Collins on them if we were cooped up 24/7 together.

Yup! Right about now I could go for a little global warming. Waiting for the kids to get home from school. They are out early and Governor Dayton has already cancelled school for the entire state of MN for Monday due to cold temps and wind chill. |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | According to weatherbug, we're possibly seeing -30 below tomorrow with winds up to 35 mph. If you calculate that out, we're talking wind chills of about -70 below.
Next year I will NOT be here!!!! Screw this. |

Same here. Im in northern MN and just saw the Gov. closed school for the whole stae on Monday because of the low temps/windchills forecasted for Monday. That is almost unheard of here (to close all of the schools in the state). It has been horrible this year so far, usually Jan and Feb are cold and Im used to that, but most of December has been nasty. My horses tore off and shredded their Rambo blankets so now they have nothing (they didnt get blanketed until they had a decent hair coat). old man still has his heavyweight on and I have another 100gram liner on him. I have three stalls in the barn which is usually 10-20 above but the one night they chose to be outside in -40 temps. We'll see if they want to stay in or not this weekend. Long as they have hay and a place to get a break from the wind and mine have warm water, they will be fine. |
