Parvo is not very common in adult dogs. They usually have built up an immunity to it. I would guess this is something else: pancreatitis, foreign body, gastritis, etc...

Years ago we had a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. When he was about 2 years old he got Parvo. He was my Dad's bird dog so when he got sick my dad spared no expense to save him. When he was "better" and they sent him home he literally would sit outside looking up at our apple tree. All day long. It was the saddest thing in the world. He seemed to have zero brain function. I sincerely hope your situation is different and that Parvo isn't the case. It is truly an awful thing to go through. Good luck!

I rescued a dog from the pound one year. It was very sick and I asked the shelter what they would do with the dog- they said they would just put it to sleep since it was sick (parvo). So they let me take the dog for free under a contract to spay her. I remember it was Thanksgiving week. Anyhow- she was in isolation for the holiday week and weekend but she did live and was a great dog.

is he on the pretreatment meds for heartworms?Β maybe its that. parvo they puke yellow acidy gunk and blody diarrehea

We are not actually treating him for heartworms yet, only started him on preventative. Yes, he was puking yellow bile...he had nothing left in him. I was unable to find any poop, though. We are thinking he could have contracted parvo since his immune system is not in good shape due to bad/no nutrition. His skin is a mess also...again just thinking he's malnourished.

She did tell me X-rays for a foreign body would be the next step. He's the second rescue in the past few months. I found a very thin scared 6 month old lab mix not long ago and we found her a great home. It's sad that people can just dump them rather than humanely put them to sleep. Starving to death in the woods is way worse than going to sleep!

My life is chaotic! A Pit showed up last week, nearly starved to death and now I come home to 20 piles of puke! Vet is thinking Parvo! What can you tell me about an adult 2-3 yr old pulling through this?

I've had two get parvo. Both were small puppies, both half bred, and both survived.
I took them both to the vet IMMEDIATELY, as in the very hour they started diarrhea and/or puking. I was able to take both home with IVs, shots, and fluids. It was full time care for at least a week, but they both are it through.

The first was a German Shepard/Belgian Malinois in the mid nineties, and the second was a Coon Hound/Heeler just this last year. Same treatment, same outcome.

Our vet told us after the dog got rid of the parvo to treat the yard with 1/2 cup of bleach 1 gallon of water combo and it would kill the parvo in the yard.
And i believe it did we had other dogs after that and they never got sick.

I thought it was kind of like strangles- just lived in the ground and nothing you could do to prevent it other than outbreak isolation?

Our puppies passed away and we treated the yard and the next dog lived just fine in the yard.

My vet told me dirt kills bleach. Bleaching the actual yard does no good. I did bleach my porch, fence, and sidewalk after our Beagle come down with Parvo. Those hand held bug sprayers will be your best friend.

I had to leave our dog at the vet for 3 days but he pulled through. Its typically a 50/50 shot based on how hard the dog wants to fight to live. Parvo dehydrates them so quickly... It is pitiful to see one go through. Im so glad our boy pulled through... We realized something was wrong pretty much right away around 9pm when he wouldnt eat, acted sluggish and started vomiting. I stayed up all night with that dog crying and begging him not to die, letting him sleep about 20-30mins at a time then waking him up and putting a syringe of gatorade(all I had at the moment) down him and begging him to keep it down. I knew if he kept it down for any amount of time his body would use some of it. 3 days at the vet, lots of praying, and $500 later he pulled through.

I will say a prayer for your boy!

Well, I probably need my head examined, but I just agreed to pay for exploratory surgery.  Vet is thinking he has a blockage due to blood work/symptoms.  Xrays did not show a clear view and she didn't want to waste money on a barium test thingy....Said exploratory surgery would be next best option....or euthanasia.  I told her to go ahead.  He's got all the odds stacked against him but is such a sweet pea, I hate not giving him a chance.  I'll try to upload a few photos.  Please pray for my bank account!!!

Hey! Hope Boom Boom is doing well! Ruger pulled through just fine and is hyper as ever today. I've decreased his Lasix back to where it was and he's still breathing fine! I couldn't remember if I told you about this little dog that showed up last week in the midst of Ruger's sickness. It's never ending around here! LOL

He made it through surgery! He had about 5 inches of his intestine that had died and was torn. She's assuming he may have had something lodged in there at one time, and it damaged his intestine. She got him all sewed up and now it's just a matter of keeping infection away and him healing. She said she will keep him until at least Friday. Hopefully he will feel a million times better real soon!

I REALLY appreciate the thoughts, prayers, and offer of help!!! We will make it through this just like we've done in the past, but that is really kind!!! I'm hoping to have positive updates by the end of the week! Now, I must get sleep! I worked off this morning and barely caught a nap due to two other spoiled puppy dogs who think their mama should not be allowed to sleep during the day! Hope you guys have a GREAT week and I really appreciate all the feedback and kind words!!!
