Many years ago we had a horse injured in a trailer accident
(bumper pull came off hitch around curb; horse trailer slid on the side; horse grated up but okay; never sound to rope off of again but lived out his years on the ranch
) and it's just one of those things that happens. My brother was riding as a passenger with a friend in his rig and it just happened -- nothing much anybody could really do.
I worry when I loan out horses but I also know that bad things can happen just as quickly here at our ranch as with them being elsewhere. I know when I borrow horses or have them in my care, I treat them like they are one of my own and the people who borrow mine do the same. You just gotta enjoy the heck out of them when you have a chance to and see each day as a blessing that you have with them. My only regret would not being able to say that if something bad happened to one of them, that they weren't loved and cared for to the best of my ability. I make sure that I don't have that regret.
I was fortunate enough to get to ride some awesome horses growing up that didn't belong to us. I learned so much from them and we treated them like gold. I don't have a problem loaning a horse out to someone I trust. Things will happen no matter where you are. I've seen tough careers ended by freak accidents, you can't prevent everything.
Trucks, trailers, saddles, bits, I don't mind loaning them out a bit. They are nothing but things and can be replaced. We've been blessed so many times by people loaning us stuff that I feel like it's the only right thing to do if I can help someone else out.

It depends on the person and situation, but I might loan out a horse if I was present at the event. Trucks and trailers I don't normally lend out. The one exception is a friend that is keeping my new trailer at their house. They are allowed to use the trailer whenever they want. I know they would fix anything that they broke and their doing me a big favor by storing it for me until I get moved.

I would and have loaned out my horses but only to certain people and I am usually present. I've also been fortunate to have been on the receiving end of having a horse loaned out to me and I've always been grateful. I also am of the mindset that if something happens to said horse when I am using it - at the very least I'd offer to pay expenses.
