I love Dashin Bye! I rode a son of his a few years ago out of a merridoc daughter. My friend currently own Dashin Bye's full brother, Sweet First Down and I am going to breed a mare to him.

I think the extent of their racing career and the innate nature of the horse both factor into how they come out of it.

I think the career racehorses that are winners on the track are more intense, love having a job and are a different sort- they may have raced a lot (ie for years) are more likely to be hotter, much more so than the horse that only started a couple times.

In general, I do agree with Diane that race bred horses tend to actually be LESS hot compared to cow horses.

Also, I personally like a "career" horse- they may be hotter, but they have also already learned how to think at full speed. I think that is a huge advantage. JMO

My favorite horse of all time is my OTT gd of Mr Jess Perry . Nothing what so ever bothers her. She's willing to do ANYTHING! And the quickest learner I've ever had. But, also have a daughter of Hail Corona that ran on the track (won money to).   I gave up on riding her cause she is so dang LAZY! We are going to breed her this year!

I've had 3 OTT horses (2 quarters, 1 TB) over the years and have been super pleased with all of them.   All 3 of them had a great work ethic and have been some of my favorites that I've ever had.

I'm a fan of race-breds and really believe the majority of them are not as hot as some of the cow-breds I've been on.  I tend to get along with race lines much better.

HorsesNHarleys - 2014-02-19 8:48 AM I bought one thinking I would have a freerunner and ended up with a barrel hunter!  haha

Me too! Mine is not slow & easy going when I ride - he wants to go places and go places NOW - but he is a total sweetheart. In fact, he was my pick to spend a day at my brother & sister-in-law's place buddying up to the new OTT horse I picked up this afternoon. Haven't ridden the new one yet so don't know exactly what I've got yet but I'm excited to find out. :)

I do love that my first OTT horse can clock without even trying. He ran in the 2D on his 5th run ever with about 40 days of barrel training under his belt. I wasn't pushing him but just loping, he could clock pretty well.
