What I have found with my experiences… pedigree attracts them first, then they ask what the dam did or has produced.

I will be honest- pedigree is the first thing that gets my attention in an ad. HOWEVER, The second thing I do is start looking at what that mare did, or her babies did, or her siblings did. I won't be blinded by pedigree when looking for a mare or prospect. Must have both record and pedigree IMO to be worth the big bucks.

I'm not saying they won't be sellable if the mare doesn't have all three attributes. I think they all go hand in hand though. The more things the mare has going for her, the more the baby is worth.

The "resident broodmare" at my house is a daughter of Stoli out of a stakes winning/producing mare. My mare herself doesn't have a big record. 3 outs on the track, SI 79, and then they turned her out to be a broodie. Therefore, I got her for a decent price, and expect decent prices out of her babies.
^^^ Until her oldest babies start competing and hopefully winning, then they command more. however that won't happen until at least 2017!

My other broodie for 2014 is my rodeo mare. She was bred just this one time so far. Has a really nice pedigree for barrels- half sisters have won a ton, she's won quite a bit… her FDF baby in my opinion will automatically be more valuable than my other FDF baby, and if I sell it, it will not be as affordable as the one I am selling now!

What do you think of your Stoli mare? What is her breeding on the dams side?

I like seeing a pedigree with proven horses on it.

So if 15,000 is low what would be the minimum $ amount you'd consider proven?

We have a retired race horse here he won about 38,000 highest winning offspring of his father and mother to date, he was a second place cheep claimer.

To me its not so much how much money has been won its WHERE has that money been won?

Ok now here's another question what is the difference between the $ track horses run for and barrel horses? Maybe a $15,000 mare is the equivalent of a 35,000 track horse?

What do you think of your Stoli mare? What is her breeding on the dams side?

I LOVE HER!!! Stoli is a phenomenal horse and his babies are amazing. I love mine. Her dam is Shiney Miles, who is also the dam to the stallion Rare News. Her maternal grandsire is Magical Mile. She is very sweet, curious, loves attention. She's big bodied, has a refined head, huge shoulder and hip. Is one of our dominant mares and the only thing I fault her on is she will kick at the horse next to her during feeding time. If I had little sheds in the pasture, I would leave her out 24/7. But we stall at night.

www.allbreedpedigree.com/bright+miles is my mare.

Of course we'd all LOVE to have both.   However IMO in barrel racing the pedigree is most important.

We have mainly gone on pedigree being #1 - of course if they are proven and or proven producers thats even better.  We have one more whos not an "own daughter" of anyone but is a world champion herself .. this is our first year foaling out of her so we'll see in which order all the babies sell and where hers ends up.  However, most of our mares who didnt win on the track or never got the opportunity to run barrels - are proven thru their offspring.  We have a couple younger mares who dont have babies old enough to run yet.

Honestly as tough as the market is getting .. you better have the whole package to sell prospects for good money ... so many people are raising babies...

So now I'm wondering what your qualifications are for considering them proven?
