 Canine Carryout Queen
Location: Oklahoma | Everything is in our name ... except a couple colts by our stallion we bought to place. One is sold and leaves in a couple weeks - the other one is possibly sold. so those two knowing I wouldnt' have them long - I did not transfer.
Everything else on our place is transferred.
I have been trying to track down a gelding we had for 10 years ... he is still in our name after 5 years of selling him... sigh, sure wish I know who owned him! |

Location: ND | I'm guilty of not always transferring. I've owned my Appi for 6 years & he's still in the last owners name. In his case I know he will NEVER be sold, he will be with someone in my family for the rest of his life. And being my only Appi I haven't felt the need to get a membership & transfer him or pay the non member fees to get it done. If I end up with another Appi at some point I'll probably transfer them both but for one horse just haven't done it. All my QH's have been transferred as soon as I buy them though since I have a membership there. |

Location: Randolph, Utah | I'm guilty! I've got transfer papers all ready to go on 2 mares just need to write the check and mail. There is a good chance they'll both be mommas at some point so I need to get them done.
My dad bought a gelding a year ago and I'm sure he'll never be transferred, mostly because he's a lifer at our place. |

| We transfer everything to our name. When we got married we bought a joint lifetime membership, and I'm so glad that we did. I've bought several horses that came with a transfer, and I always worry that I'm going to have to jump through hoops to get things straightened out and get them in our name. Usually what I buy is for future resale, and as a seller I want to make sure paperwork is in order before I sell a horse. I haven't looked up any of the horses we've sold to see if they've been transferred to the new owners or not. |

Location: Peg-Leg Julia Grimm | I have one mare I got the end of January that I haven't sent the papers in to transfer yet. My reason is they gave me a transfer signed by the wrong person...so I had to wait for the new transfer to get here. It just came late last week. I'll probably wait until I get her in foal now to send it in. |

Location: The birthplace of Honest Abe | When you dont transfer and you sell the horse then it can become a headache for the person buying it. I got a mare in Oct last year and luckily the original owners where nice enough to do an avidivait on lost papers so I could get her papers in my name. |

Location: Arkansas | We have 15 on our place (2 are grade). Only 2 of the registered ones aren't in our names: a mare that we purchased about a month ago and I just haven't gotten them sent in yet. The other is an 18 year old gelding that we were given. He will be used as a lesson horse and his papers are in the name of the daughter of the lady that we got him from. I doubt that we will transfer him. I stay on top of transfers because we tend to resell. |

This......I bought a gelding a couple years ago that no one took the time to transfer. It took me forever, many pictures, a letter from the breeder and a signed affidavit. When hauling my horses I want copies of AQHA papers in my name & brand releases all in my trailer. |

| To me geldings are just as important to transfer as mares! They need a history.
I bought a gelding a few years ago as "grade" (I will not own a grade horse). I had to track his papers using his lip tattoo. I got him at the age of 18. His papers had not been transferred since he was a 3yo at the track!!! Fortunately for me, I am fairly handy at finding people and I was able to get the papers re-issued. I know he had at least 4 owners, I know he was a trained roping horse, I know he was a trained barrel horse, I know he has abused....but I don't know his true history!!! Why people?!?!? Argh!!!
When I sold him, he was transferred, even though he was 21 by then.
I believe in ownership and having documentation to prove it! |

On the geldings, did you get them from the last recorded owner or is there a gap there?
I know sometimes I'll look up an old horse and realize it is still in my name....sometimes 13+ years later.
Yes, there is usually a gap in owners for almost every gelding I have purchased!!!
However, I register all of them in my name! |

How many of you own registered horses and have not transferred their papers into your name?
If you do, why haven't you transferred? Cost? Time? Desire?
We have 6, 2 mares & 4 geldings, ALL are registered in my name!!!

Location: Oklahoma | Is it true that your membership can be revoked if you don't transfer? http://horsesonly.com/articles/buying.htm
...If a seller fails to record the transfer of ownership, as above, their AQHA membership can be suspended, which is a very serious situation. This means they cannot race or show in AQHA events, they cannot transfer any more horses into their ownership, they can't stand a stallion, breed a mare, register a foal, etc., etc. If a horse dies or is sold without papers, the recorded owner must report this to AQHA and send the certificate of registration to them for notation....
Can someone please explain to me the transfer process? I know that we received the papers on one of my geldings, but I don't believe it came with any "transfer" paper. I think we have now lost his papers, but we have contact with the previous owner. How would I go about getting a transfer on a horse that has missing papers?? |

To get lost papers, there is an AQHA form that the owner on record must sign & have notarized, plus new pictures and the "buyer" portion needs to be filled out also. You can get the form from AQHA.com, under forms, I believe.

Location: Texas | It is very simple. When you get the reg. papers, check the name of the last recorded owner. The person you purchased from SHOULD be the last name you see! If not they should supply you with a transfer report that is signed by the last recorded owner to them, and then one signed by them to you. |

You need to print out a duplicate affidavit and have the last recorded owner do their half and you do your half. They will also have to sign a transfer report. |
