Location: Phoenix | UPDATE: she's stabilized. About 4 broken ribs and her chest cavity has collapsed. She's in an oxygen kennel, on IVs and is wagging her tail. We need to decide soon if we a) let her be and try and heal on her own b) have the vet do surgery to install some sort of wall to help with the chest cavity c) send her to a university to see what they can do.
Vet couldn't give us a success rate as they've never done it. ($1000) University would be $2000-3000.
Anyone have a similar scenario? What would you do? What should I do?

Location: south arkansas | this is only my opinion and I have never delt with a situation like this but if your baby is hanging in there and wagging her tail she is a fighter and I would have to do whatever I could to try to save her........ but like I said it is just my opinion and I realize there is ALOT to consider..... Good Luck and I hope she pulls through |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | How convinced are you that she needs surgery for 4 broken ribs? Is the vet confident that she can't survive without surgery? What would happen if you weaned her off the oxygen and just observed her for a day or two? Perhaps with some pain medication she will do OK if you just keep her inside and as calm as possible. I'm not a vet, but from your description, I have to admit this doesn't completely make sense to me. Maybe I'm missing something. |

Praying....I know this isn't fun. I lost one earlier this year but only because I didnt' find her in time. She was also a pup. I found her the next day after looking the night before took her to the vet and we thought she would pull through. She did not. I agree with the above poster, if she is fighting for it and she is your baby I would do what I had to. To some it is rediculous I know. But I always try to consider the life of my animal. If they still have a chance at a quality life and will not be suffering than I'm all about helping them. I would have if I'd had the chance w my puppy. I'm praying for you and your girl. (on an encouraging note, we had one pup have his jaw shattered by a horse earlier this year and had plates and the whole nine yards. He is a normal healthy puppy these days!) |

My little Ca-Ca Camarillo become paralyzed right before my eyes. Took him immediately to the vet. They said $5,000 for surgery but settled for $3,000 because we just couldn't afford it. He came out of the surgery great. Those weiner dogs are pretty tough! Best to you. |

| IMO, I wouldn't let the vet do the surgery if it's $1000 and the vet hasn't performed anything like it before.
I would take your dog to a university or find a larger vet that is capable of doing the surgery. |

Location: Phoenix | I talked to my dad some more....I guess if you were to gently press behind her shoulder it's really soggy and squishy. I'd hate to opt out of surgery and have her die....on the other hand I'd hate to have her die during surgery....
Mom and dad are headed there tonight before they close to check on her. She'll stay overnight but it's unsupervised overnight...so hopefully she makes it thru the night. I guess she was moving around at home by the fire while dad was getting ready to take her to the vet. She's tough as nails but I'd hate to be a couple thousand in debt and have her die anyways.....ahhh :( |

I understamd that a lot of other people don't think like that and there is a lot to consider. Sounds like she's a fighter. Sending good vibes your/her way |

Honestly, I love my dogs... but spending 2-3K on one likely would not happen. I'm not sure why they wouldn't give you the option of trying to let her heal on crate rest/meds? |
