BamaCanChaser - 2014-03-24 11:39 AM There are two Royal Fletch horses in my area that are very nice 1D supershow/rodeo horses. Here's an article BHN did about cow-bred horses succeeding at barrels. http://www.barrelhorsenews.com/articles/rodeo/3553-a-cut-above I wish I could get my hands on a Highbrow Cat, but all the really nice ones go to the cutting pen. Anyone know of any running barrels?

I found a colt (assuming unbroke) on CL I can PM you if you'd like!

I was going to mention Especial - he is in the article a lot.
My mare has Especial, he has a lot of get & grandget in the barrel pen.

One of the greatest barrel horses running right now is by Biebers Oakie (Double bred Doc Bar and Poco Tivio) out of a race mare by Judge Cash.  http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/an+oakie+with+cash

Both of my horse's are double bred Doc's Prescription and I love them!Β  They can be a little hot and stubborn but very smart and athletic, good bone and size to them too.Β  I actually searched for another doubleΒ Doc's Prescription when I started looking.

Couldnt agree more! I ran two docs prescription grandbabies and both were phenominal and proved themselves well in the AQHA and rodeo scenes in the 90s. A offspring of one mentioed ones AQHA world and congress. She was docs prescription x organ grinder (peppy san) bred.

From what I have seen, rode, and heard, for best results if you are going to cross race on cow for a barrel prospect, breed a race bred mare to a cow bred stud.

Also forgot to mention Mighty Mouse was out of the stud I am referring to. She won the IFR I wanna say?

I've had excellent luck with the Docs Jack Frost lines---Docs Jack Frost is the sire of Sun Frost and Doc Bruce and of course Sun Frost being the sire of Frenchmans Guy, I absolutely love the FG horses.

I am also a huge fan of anything Peppy San, Peponita, Peppy San Badger (Paddys Irish Whiskey is a son of Peppy San Badger).
Doc's Oak, Docs Hickory, and Miss N Cash.

I've had several really nice cutting bred barrel horses in the past.  Most recently I've switched over to race breeding because they seem to sell better (for me) but I will always have a soft spot in my heart for a cow horse.

Interesting read. My colt has similar breeding to Diane's horse referenced in the article on his bottom side and Mighty Mouse on his top. May be when he can breath this year he will show me he can get it too!

I have 1 cowbred mare and she is very consistent making 3D times with only a year of training and a handful of hauling. And she's very nicely built with a nice front and back end on her. She has two-eyed Jack and Jackie Bee top and bottom and everyone gives me complements on her. Vey well minded horse and great all around. I've beaten top notch western pleasure horses at some of our big local shows and she's my barrel horse. The western pleasure people always say barrel horses are crazy but I show them that not all of them are it's just the way their trained and she's knows the difference between a run and a horse show. She's bred this year so can't wait to see how the baby turns out. Should be born the first part of December.

I have a 5 yr old full sister to one of the Fletch mares you're talking about.  Our little mare "Hotbox" looks just like "Ditto".  They are super fun little horses.  We love Royal Fletch and you can breed a Docs Stylish Oak mare to just about anything and get a nice colt.

To me the biggest debate about the most influential barrel horse sire in the north would be,  is it Docs Jack Frost, his son Sun Frost or his g-son Frenchmans Guy.

We have a 5 year old by a Real Gun son and so far she is super easy to get along with, trainable and talented.  We really like watching the Playguns work, the Freckles Playboy in the pedigrees seem to transfer to the barrels pretty well.

dianeguinn - 2014-03-24 2:43 PM Well, I've come over to the dark side....I was one of the Hancock haters, but I bought a gorgeous 3 yr old bay roan that is out of an AWESOME race mare and he is one of the gentlest, smartest, most athletic horses I've ever owned. I just bought him to resell, but I'm liking him so much, I think he may have to stay at the Guinn house for awhile. www.allbreedpedigree.com/rafter+jet+jud

There are some really good ones out there

hoofs_in_motion - 2014-03-24 9:48 AM I'm really big into two eyed jack, jackie bee, peptoboonsmal and high brow cat. I avoid hancock bred horses. I'm breeding my mare to a peptoboonsmal bred stallion on the time side and he goes back to lady bugs moon on the bottom. I'm very excited!!!
Just out of curosity, why do you stay away from Hancock bred horses?

Genunine Doc and Docs Superstar Bar horses have proven to be good ones.
When I had a 3 year old hancock bred filly attempt to kill me, and she broke the trainers arm....I've always been leery about them, but I wouldn't pass one by if it was good looking and super broke

Well I can understand you being leery now!  They are really tough and gritty horses. I think that's what makes the good ones good. Some of the toughest horses we've had in the NW go back to Hancock.

I have a friend in FL who is running a VERY nice, young High Brow Cat that came from Jud Little's that is amazing. He's still running a bit green and winning tougher jackpots.

I just got a new gelding in thats a grandson of Highbrow Cat and Freckles Merada. I'm loving him so far - he's big hippef, long strided and fast!http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/cats+call+me+elvis.
