Location: your guess is as good as mine | Blaine's mom - 2014-03-28 8:34 AM I wonder how/if this will affect the Bonus Race Finals... I know Renea is saying watch your horses, have your vaccinations up to date, etc., but a big event like that could be detrimental to keeping it under control. :(
And the BBR Finals at the end of April... |

| For those of you feeding lysine, how much do you feed for it to be effective? Thank you! |

| We'll be feeding the recommended dose on the bucket, between 7-10g 2x's a day...
Also, in the comments on the Abraham's Facebook post someone said the horse was in Mn on the 15th and no horses had come or gone since it got home...Abrahams hasn't confirmed, but I thought I'd let you guys know, seems to be isolated |

Location: Texas | Guys, please don't think that lysine will protect your horse from this strain of EHV-1. I don't know enough to say it does or doesn't work, but I would absolutely not risk my horse getting the neuropathic strain because I think I'm doing a good thing with the lysine. I am sure there are benefits and it probably helps boost the immune system, but the EHV1 neuropathic strain isn't something to play around with for trial and error. maybe the regular strain of EHV1, but not this one.

| Is it the neuro type that the others have or respiratory? Vet told me that neuro has no vacc. and the horse is dead if gets it. He said he wouldn't let a scare keep him home unless it is in a known outbreak area. Just follow precautions like not tying on top of each other to keep nose to nose contact at a min. keep horses tied to trailer instead of in the crowd etc. |

| This is the respiratory that is causing neuro effects, so basically a mutain strain.
Please stay home for two - three weeks so this can pass so we don't loose our whole racing season, or worse yet, your horse! |

Location: You never know where I will show up...... | My vet swears by feeding lysine, and he uses it to treat horses that actually have EHV along with other supportive care treatments for the disease. That is good enough reason for me to use it as a supplement. None of my other vitamin/mineral supplements contain adequate amounts of it and I don't feed alfalfa, soybean meal, ect. and those things naturally contain lysine. I must supplement it since they don't get it in their diet unless I do. Obviously people need to use their heads----No one said that lysine used on it's own, it would cure or prevent EHV from happening-- but it's cheap so what is it going to hurt? I am sure I have spent money on stupider things.

This IS an outbreak.
If you are anywhere near the area, stay home. That simple. |

Thanks Amy. If Dave recommends it then I trust him. |

Yes, things like alfalfa and soybean meal are both good sources of lysine. It's an essential amino acid---something they have to get out of their feed-- or it should be supplemented. A lot of commercial grain mixes for horses will contain it but I mix my own feed for my competition horses so I have to add it. |

Maintenance= 23 grams for a mature 1100# idle horse, up to 50 grams for a growing horse the same weight in intense work. Most plain grains are deficient in it. |

I can confirm this horse was in MN and stopped at a location on March 15th. I cannot state much more than that but it is good information. This horse from IA was a pleasure horse, so we longer can be the targets.
This crap is scarying the crap out of me. Our boarding facility has been on lockdown since this started and the owners are doing everything they can as far as precautions go. I think I might look into the lysine just to ease my mind. I hate feeling powerless. |

Scary part is, a girl I know horse is positive and she also hasnt hauled since November. i dont know any further if they narrowed down the exposure or if maybe it was dormant in her system and some stress caused it to come to the surface or if it came on a vet, farrier, etc.
Its a scary big and my horse hasnt been anywhere since September but days like today you wish you didnt board just because its hard to really watch your horse like you want to and just makes these times more stressful. |
