Get him socialized at home before you attempt to take him to a race.  If he is really good you would hate to have him get hurt because no one would give you room

Studs or not, people are absolutely stupid when it comes to getting to close to other people's horses. I generally try to warm up in a little spot all by myself. I have one that threatens to kick if somone gets in her space. She has never actually done it yet but I'm tired of giving people the eye and telling them she kicks just to have them come back around and get too close again. I'm just waiting for her to do it one of these days, then I can be like "I told you she kicks, did you think I was kidding." I'm tired of people being stupid, if you are going to have horses you should know your safety precautions better......and sometimes it takes someone getting hurt for common sense to kick in. |

If your not sure how he is going to act then take him to a smaller show first and see how he acts...you worry about keeping him safe and keep your distance! You cannot expect people to give you space...people just simply don't care anymore so you have to worry about yourself and your horse. |

Location: Wyoming | Common sense goes a long way. Unfortunately people seem to be lacking this particular trait. I have had studs for the last 30 years and never once has my stallion misbehaved even when people knew he was a stud and back their mares into him.
Training is so important stallions must know without a doubt what behavior is acceptable and which is not. When we use the stallions for breeding it's always same place, time, breeding halter and same handler. There are so many hoarer stories and thankfully I have never experienced anything but exceptionally well behaved stallions, mares and their owners now that's another story. |

Look at your previous comment, you were complaining "they weren't giving you room"
You own a stallion, that comes with a great responsibility and great liability.

I bring my unseasoned 2 year old stud to see the sights sometimes, and I don't expect anyone to give me any more room than another horse. I tie my stud to the first tie and my other horses further down. I do put a blue ribbon in his tail...but if he can reach you or your horse, it's probably your fault because we show up early and park in the back or in an area that isn't easily accessible once one trailer is in that area at a local jackpot spot. I do not pony him at the jackpots yet...only at home or in our local weeknight open arena.
No stallion should be unattended.
It is never the other horses/owners fault, you are the one who choose to bring a stallion, he is your responsibility. |

My friend and I put on a winter series in a little indoor arena in town and I tied my stud up in the arena so I could run in the office to do the payout. Keep in mind in our little community and everyone at the run knew he was a stud but you can't fix stupid. A girl and her dad turned a mare loose in the arena. Who the hell does that? Bugs started nickering a little and making himself look real pretty. My friend saw what was going on and came and got me. The dad and daughter were standing there looking stupid so I hollared across the arena. My stud fee is $______ and if your stupid enough to turn your mare loose in an arena where a stud is tied up then please start writing your check.
They got their mare out of the arena.

Location: Kansas (but Great Lakes member since 1978) | I raised a very awesome colt and was keeping him a stud for my own broodmares and just a few outside mares.... long story short, he's gelded and I have frozen semen stored. He wasn't the problem it was other peoples mares that caused me to make that decision. He was always tied up at our trailer and usually had panels around him or at least partway in order to deter other's getting too close. He ended up getting injured four times last summer at different rodeos at night when mares would either bring their pens with them or break their halters or just untie themselves and visit him. We'd get woke up in the night with my colt being clobbered, kicked and bitten and even found him once tangled in the mare's pen which she had managed to bring along on her visit. I totally hated to make that decision but it wasn't worth him getting crippled over. Between that a a friend of mine out west losing her very expensive stud for the same reason it just had to be done. I hauled a stud back in the 70s and never had that problem. He was very well mannered and never gave me a lick of trouble and back then horse owners were evidently more knowledgeable or whatever when it came to keeping their horses properly "contained". I know have a wonderful gelding and several unbred broodmares and it's really upsets me that I had to pay the price for other's irresponsibility. Yes, sometimes it can't be helped but most of the time it can. |

This is here nor there, but if he was always tied up at your trailer, why didn't you just keep him in the trailer over night.
With my horses, young ones especially if I am not in a safe place, the horses sleep in the trailer.

From her previous posts I assumed that she is looking for advice not special privileges. The OP is asking for help. Such as, if Vicks actually works. Obviously, some people answered her question. What I got from the thread is that arriving early, warming up in a secluded area, being picky about which shows to enter, stalling the stud in a trailer, constant supervision, and using Vicks helps. On the other hand portable panels, blue ribbons, and crowded shows do not work. I think these are lessons that everyone (even non-stud owners) can learn from and appreciate the OP asking.

Location: The RIGHT side of insanity! | I've not read everything. Here is my input on studs at barrel races. If they can't behave like a gelding, leave them home! Manners are manners and their either have them or they don't. The last stud I hauled would behave like a gelding. I wasn't worried if someone ran up on me, or crowded me - I'd get him off the trailer and lead him and another horse to stalls, together. My stud could have cared less that he was being led with another horse. I'd done my homework and he had manners. Since a person can't fix stupid, you have to be prepared for it.
I was at a show last weekend where a woman came in the warm up pen with a horse just screaming. I looked over and she was telling everyone she was riding a stud. I said, "So what? Can't control him, don't bring him!" Just my thoughts. |

You cannot expect people to give you space...people just simply don't care anymore so you have to worry about yourself and your horse. How about the ones that turn their studs loose to graze at the jackpot? Seriously?! Several years ago I had taken my futurity horse to a local jackpot to exhibition. She was in heat and tied to my trailer. All of the sudden I heard a bunch of squealing and commotion at my trailer. My husband and I ran around our rig to see what was going on and this lady's stud was ON MY MARE BREEDING HER, my expensive Caldwell saddle was on my mare. She was parked all the way across the parking area from us but she'd just turned him loose to graze after her run. All the lady said was she never thought he'd do that. WTH? He's a stud and he has balls. And my mare was in heat. She laughed about it but I was piffed. I had to lutalyse my mare 2 weeks after the incident just in case. Fortunatley neither my mare nor my saddle were hurt.
ETA: I hauled 2 studs for 10 years. I usually had mine hobbled and tied to my trailer both. One of my best rodeo horses was a stud, he spent lots of nights in a hotwire pen next to my trailer when I was hauling him a lot, never a problem. I'd never have dreamed of ever letting them loose to graze in a parking lot. My yellow stud had a knack of untying himself from my trailer, thus he was tied with 2 ropes and hobbled just in case. At shows with tight parking spaces he'd stay on the trailer if I wasn't running him or I'd buy a stall to put him in.
