I for one won't get my panties in a wad over ice skaters being on the telecast. NBC had a 3 hour show for a 2 minute horse race.....that's a lot of time to fill, and I for one was entertained!!!(and I'm dang near as old as Roxie!!!!)

Exactly.  I think it's pretty telling that there are almost no horse races shown on major network TV any more (except the TC races & BC) - used to be they showed almost every major stakes race...now they're all on HRTV if they're shown at all.  Personally I'd far rather watch a horse race than a golf tournament, yet almost every weekend there's a golf tournament shown...why?  Because that's what more people choose to watch so the network gets better ratings (and sells more advertising).  To get ratings you have to attract NON-horse racing people to watch...same reason they have famous sports personalities & actors giving out their picks.  The fact is those are the people that the non-horse public tune in to see...see who is there and what they're wearing, and so forth.

Truth is I couldn't care less about the whole "who's there" and fashion part either...I always film it & just watch the race - that way I can fast forward through the other stuff & focus on the horse stories.  But I also love seeing Bob Costas and Jerry Bailey and all of the other commentators, as well as seeing the pieces they put together about the so-called "unseen stories" & history of racing.  So personally I don't care if they dress Shaq in a pink tutu with sparkly wings & fly him over the track on a rope (oh God...the mental picture
)...if it means they get the ratings to keep showing the races on TV then so be it.  Personally I found JW hilarious - and even funnier was watching my Dad's reaction.

I think from here on out all major sporting events should have clueless athletes from other venues commentating strictly for the entertainment. Ty Murray can do figure skating. Dale Jr the Stanley Cup. David Beckham Monday night football etc.

Perhaps those who liked Johnny Wier, would love to have him doing the commentary for the NFR........

Oh yea. I particularly enjoyed Bob Costass teaming with PETA for the sensationalized attack of Asmussen. Bet that really helps the viewership.

When I have to be subject to progressive activists and drag queens, I'll just tune in for two minutes of the race.

I highly doubt your post was a simple "objection".

Anyway, yeah, the hat looks pretty stupid...but you have to admit...about 50% of all the others are just as whacky and dumb. LOL.

I don't know...this just seems to be the silliest thing to be miffed over? The Derby is a tradition in more ways than one.

I was gone out of town the day of the Derby, so I didnt get to watch it on TV, but my thoughts are with all of the retired trainers, and jockeys WHY do they need ice skaters to do the pre-show??? I would much rather watch someone who actually knows what they are talking about.

LOL, I get what you're both saying -- however, the "P" story upset me more than the JW stuff.  I'm not a Costas fan to begin with & that sort of iced the cake.

The Peta piece was needed. What Asmussen stable has been accused of has been all over the net and on some news stations. Why try to put it back in the box when it is already out. Address it and let the world know his side of the story.....( I will simply say no comment on what he said)

There are HUGE problems on that tracks and it needs to be stopped.

I do understand what you're saying, I promise -- I just think that on race day the sport is better served with positive stories & reporting.  Giving voice to a group that wants ultimately to shut down all equine sports just rubbed me the wrong way, even if it was presented to give Asmussen a chance to publicly defend himself (which also bothered me).
