casualdust07 - 2014-05-12 11:16 AM Im recovering from a concussion I sustained a week ago from a horse I got thrown from. I don't even remember saddling the horse, getting on the horse, riding the horse, or whatever happened to get me thrown. It was a client horse. I don't remember coming in the house, going to the ER, most of the stay at the ER, and even on the way home I was repeating myself and texting my friend the same questions over and over. I am in the process of getting a helmet, and whoever criticizes helmets in the western world should be ashamed of themselves. It doesn't take anything away from my accomplishments. and wearing a helmet won't make my 1D horse a 3D horse. It will make me a safer rider- that's all.

Not to mention all that hard-earned vet school knowledge stored in your brain, lol.  Glad you are OK, how scary!

I wear a helmet, I absolutely hate it, I really do.  Maybe it will get better when I get to start running one of my awesome youngsters, but I have been running an older, slower horse and I feel like the slow dork with the helmet.

I know what a burden it would be on my family if I were to get in a freak accident and hit my head, so I wear one.  My husband and I both have to have vests and helmets when we are at the track and it would be really stupid to get hurt while my helmet was hanging in the trailer.  I make my kids wear one and lots of times we are the only ones in helmets, no one has ever said anything negative other than one kid making fun of my son but his parents put a stop to that.

I do wish you a speedy recovery! What a scare! Glad you are shopping for a helmet

I would tell him to go kick rocks. Why does he care, it is none of his business. It sounds like he needs to wear one to me...

that was one of the main things I was freaking out about from what I was told. Apparently I kept asking the ER doctor if I ruined vet school and if I forgot everything. I DID forget my final averages in the classes I knew about.. and had to ask my friend over and over how I made a B in physiology. LOL.

Not going to lie, I am not thrilled about getting a helmet but it would be reckless of me to not wear one. I will have to suck it up and get over it. I am hoping I will get used to it and I won't be self conscious.

I hate it too! I feel like the atomic ant when I am wearing it but it is better than having the brain of an ant after a head injury. I just bought a low profile one and it seems a bit better but still... it is not very glamorous. But like someone said, what matters is how fast we run (which right now is not very fast but I will get there too...), not how fashionable we look. (although I am a firm believer that I might not ride well, but by all means I am going to look good doing it! )
