Well all I can say is if you're a dressage rider... then you are so far ahead of the game! So much of those two disciplines cross over!!!!! So have some confidence in that because you have a skill so many people lack.

Now, as for the speed thing as others have suggested just get comfortable with your horse first. Dont worry so much about the barrels RIGHT now. Lope tons of circles work on transitions. This will give you the confidence in your partnership which will eventually help you feel more confident in your partner when you do add speed.

Obviously try not to hang on his mouth (dont know if you are). Setup obstacle courses and just work on the basics of barrel racing. Eventually when you're 100% confident in those, you'll be itching and ready to go faster.

GOOD LUCK

Thanks so much again for all the encouragement. Last time I rode him which it was Saturday, he was throwing his head a lot and I could tell he was getting very aggravated. I know part of the reason was that I am constantly trying to ride him with contact as I have been doing for God knows how long but I also got the feeling that his teeth needed care so.....I took him to the dentist yesterday and he had some sores on his cheek due to sharp points and his canines were very long (no wonder he was mad, between his teeth and my lack of skill he was hurting pretty bad, poor little guy!). I cannot ride him for about 5 days so I am kind of bumming about that as I want to try the exercises that you guys have suggested! THANK YOU!!!
