Sorry, my reply was regarding US rules for VCPR. Not sure how VCPR goes in Canada. And yes, some drugs are not allowed to cross borders - not sure on the OP's meds, would have to check with the pharmacist. Regardless of whether it is approved in Canada or not, shipping meds across the border is always a pain because of transit time and layover in customs - it's hard to keep temperature-sensitive items from being affected. If there is a Canadian online pharmacy you could work with that would be best, especially if you wanted it overnighted. I know I sent some product to a client in Canada a couple weeks ago and it sat in Customs for two business days (which ended up being over a weekend) before they released it to UPS to deliver.

If your horse colics, has an accident or gets hurt in some way and you need emergency veterinary treatment, wouldn't you need to call one of the local vets in your new area?   If so, I would think it wouldn't hurt to start this new relationship with a vet exam to get your refills so this vet will know who you are when you call with an emergency.

FlyingA - 2014-06-10 3:50 PM Actually, licensed pharmacies/vet clinics can dispense drugs without a Veterinary Client Patient Relationship, they just cannot prescribe medications. The company I work for fills scrip orders from all over the country - we don't have a VCPR with many of our customers but the vets prescribing the medications do. We have a full licensed pharmacy with a pharmacist on staff to fill orders from our vet and others. Now, our vet cannot write scrips for our clients in Oklahoma because he doesn't have a VCPR with them. But we can still dispense the drugs to our OK clients as long as we have a valid prescription from their veterinarian (who is required to have a VCPR). OP- You should be able to order the meds from any licensed veterinary pharmacy- online or otherwise- if your original vet is willing to continue writing you a scrip and sustain a VCPR. Good luck!

A pharmacy can fill prescriptions without a realationship for/on behalf of the vet that issued the prescription, but vets are not supposed to without a relationship.  I can not call/go to my vet and get a script for ventipulmin, but them go to a vet down the road that has never seen me or any of my horses to get it filled.. he won't do it without doing his own exam.  Pharmacies are different, that is their purpose... vets must have a VCPR to issue prescription drugs (supposed to, but we all know the don't always follow the rules).

Not exactly true as in Canada the pharmacy needs to be liscenced with and abide by canadian food and drug laws.

If a canadian ordered a drug from the us, and that specific formula was not liscenced in Canada most of the time the border will seize it, the extreme the canadian border can do is charge the canadian with smuggling drugs.

I just spoke with the pharmacist, and she said next time, to bring the prescription to her and she could fill it.

Glad you had that conversation and now have access to medication in your community.

I would still suggest having one of the local vets work on some of your horses, even if it is administering vaccinations (I know most of us do our own) or a quick lameness exam, this way they will be more willing to help when shit hits the fan.

I have one vet clinic that will complete blood work for me even when I pull it, they give me tubes to have on hand, and they know there is nearly no chance they will see the horse if it is critical, but between dogs and minor things I still give them enough money to keep them happy.
