Rustynailfl - 2014-08-20 1:02 PM What is it about this saddle that you all love? When you say 'I love the ride', do you like the way you sit in it? Does this saddle 'feel' deeper than it looks? I'm intrigued!!!

They sit you in the sweet spot more than any other saddle I have ever ridden.  They don't all fit deep but they are completely balanced.

Can someone explain the differences in the models of the Caldwell barrel saddles to me? I read their website but it was a little hard to figure out. I am going from an old "bear trap" saddle so what would be the best one for me?
Thanks!

They can adjust the rise of the saddle, how high the front of the seat of the saddle rises, to make a deeper seat that cups you in.   I am a 3D rider and bought a treeless for my big powerful horses.   I liked the security of it but not how trapped I felt in it.   I have Double J saddles but would get thrown forward, that doesn't happen in the Caldwells.  It sits different, as Kaycee described, it puts you where you need to be, especially for me not being as experienced a rider.

Even though most of my Caldwell's I've bought have been used, the seat just conforms to you butt like it was meant for YOUR butt. And really that's just the selfish part...the real deal is their trees fit horses like no other I have seen and I have owned or tried about every big name saddle brand you can think of.  I used to be in a treeless and when I gotten a new horse quite a few years ago and he had started bucking with the treeless (Before a person would even get on) and then I got him a Caldwell and literally never bucked again.

When you say they can adjust the rise of the saddle, do you mean the height of the pommel? Or like the actual seat part..where as some saddles are very 'flat' in that area/middle (kind of like some of the Double J's, and some have a incline into the pommel.. Just trying to get an idea.
I also ride a treeless right now and like the security of it but cant seem to 'get up' out of it when I need to. The seats in a treeless is very flat which I think gives you more of a 'secure' feel also, where as a lot of tree'd saddles have a very steep incline into the pommel to sit you back on your pockets but I tend to feel like I am actually coming up out of the back of saddles like that.

I love my Caldwell and everyone has done such a good job of describing how they feel and sit.
Just wanted to add that Charon started out riding English.  She has incorporated a lot of what is good about the English saddles into their saddles.  I think her knowledge of the English saddle is what sets their saddles apart.
They are just special.

They can adjust the incline of the seat towards the pommel. You can it relatively flat or a high rise. The cantle is taller then most saddles.   The post about the tree is an excellent point too.  Just stepping up on it feels different, it sits on the horses back different.  I did not feel as behind on my horses when leaving the barrels.

Shes talking about the rise of the seat, you can have it padded up front for more of a deeper and secure seat that makes it a bit tighter fit. I like mine with the flatter seat not much rise in the seat, I dont like the built up seats some do but I dont. Love my Caldwell hard to explain how they feel you have to ride in one to see how it feels and the fit on my horse is really nice, just a good fit if you find the right tree that they need.

And another thing that I really like about my Caldwell I have more contact with my horse, I feel like I'm sitting right on him, not on top like being perch. I hope that made any sense to you guys. LOL..

If a saddle balances you well in the middle of the horse, then you don't NEED a tall cantle to hold you in. In fact, a taller cantle can push you forward. Not saying that happens with every tall cantle, etc, just that you don't necessarily need the taller cantle. I prefer a lower cantle.

I recently tried a BB's Caldwell Pro Max.  I instantly fell in love with it as did my mom.  I felt secure, but not trapped and I really like where it put my legs.  Her sister has a Rocket and I'm gonna try it out too, because the Pro Max was too flat and wide for my mare.  Guess I better start saving now so when I see a used one I can hopefully buy it.

Is this the red oiled?  I have an ultra rocket on order for the heavy oiled but I am debating calling and getting the red instead.  Do you find it slick without any roughout?

I bought it used a few months back so I really cant tell you what color it is, I liked the way it looked and had the right tree and seat for me so I bought it, but if I were guessing I would say the red oiled, if you want you can use my picture and ask them. I need to go on their website and see what color leather they have to offer. Its not slick at all, the seat is the sticky elk and the rest of the leather is rubbed down with the Blackrock leather conditioner and not slick at all, the seat is the key...You stay when you sit down in this saddle.

I have a Caldwell and I agree with the above statements. Unfortunately my horse out grew my Pro Racer and I bought a treeless to get me through and if I ever get him back in shape, I will probably try the Performance saddles. Many Caldwell saddle lovers have gone over to them and they all rave about them.

I do have one Caldwell with roughout now, but before had 2 and neither have any roughout on them. I prefer the smooth or tooled leather. I don't think they are any more slick than the roughout.
