They will kill a deer, eat one or two internal organs and leave the rest. |

Yup, you must have never watched a wolf stalk a foal or calf for days, and then only eat a small portion of it and leave.... They are nasty F$?&/:s.... Glad we dont deal with them anymore.... |

| To the OP, a good friend of mine deals with wolves regularly.... They stalk HER and her horses around the property. She has started to bring her horses in at night, and has found the wolves waiting 10 feet outside her barn door at dawn. Warning shots seemed to work for a while.... She got a mini donkey, and that didn't seem to deter them.... I would think a mini would be the most vulnerable. Never hurts to lock them up at night, if anything. Good luck! I still stick With the the three S's.
ETA:
Another good friend of mine had her full sized horse brutally killed by a wolf... Yes the horse was old, and not as strong. So she fit into the "cull" as some would call it... But she was a horse who should have had more years, and shouldn't have gone that way... Yes it is nature, and wolves will never change... However, I will do anything I need to in order to keep them away from my old horse, pasture pal, mini, etc... I will say again they are NASTY they will eat an animal from the A$$ up.... Or as Betsy said, eat only a few organs and leave it to die...

Why gut shot? So they hole up hopefully off your property to die, then you dont have to bury them or worry about the legality of it. I would never ever gut shoot an animal so they can go hole up somewhere and suffer for days untill they die. I dont care how mean they are thats just terrible to even think that way. When we shot we shot to kill on the spot.

| Thank you everyone for the help. Sorry to be getting back so late but I was away. I was hoping I was being over concerned but it appears not.
If we see them on the property we do plan to kill them but of course I worry about it at night. We are renovating the barns on this place and as of yet I'm unable to stall them all at night. Hopefully within the month this won't be a worry anymore.
I had thought of one of those outdoor protective dogs but I would feel bad leaving them outside at night, especially in the winter. I know they like it outside but I know I'd be dragging it inside anyway.
I'm scared of wolves which also adds to the stress.

That's very true....it's known that wolves are one of the only animal predators that WILL hunt for sport. I think there is only 2, not counting humans.
I don't live in wolf country but I do know this. I had a friend that did and she bred a daughter of Ronas Ryon to the sire of Dynas Plain Special the year he died. She got a beautiful stud colt and had full intentions of leaving him a stud. Turned down big money for him as a weanling. One morning she went out to feed and she found the parts of him they didn't like...
I have 7 horses that I think a lot of, but my cattle are a big part of my families income. Something eats my livestock and it's going to eat lead. Wouldn't be the first time, won't be the last. |

Sometimes the way they go about it is to attack to injure, make the quarry bleed... lie down and wait. Once the quarry is totally helpless... they eat. They are smart enough to wait for a cow like hers to weaken or die to avoid getting hurt themselves. A wolf can only eat about 20 max anyway before it has to rest and digest. They kill to eat and have no compunction about starting the meal before the animal is dead if it does not pose a threat. They are not evil, they are just wolves. If they happen across prey that looks like an easy kill they will kill it as the next meal they know they will need. Humans arriving on the scene at any point will drive them away. If there are plenty of videos on youtube showing them killing for sport... Please point one out to me.

I know Betsy very well. She's not "full of crap" and she doesn't make things up. I have heard many accounts from people here in MN of wolves killing and barely eating anything. Basically, I think what she is saying is food is plentiful for them here in Minnesota, so evidently they have the luxury of only eating what most appeals to them. They really are very costly predators in some areas here. |

Komet once you've been stalked by a wolf or in my case 3 wolves you can talk about how they only hunt for food, until then can it or move to a subject you know something about. In this case you are wrong...wolves will hunt for fun. Keep in mind 1 wolf will kill up to or more then 25 deer a year...have you ever seen wolves prey on moose or elk...they play with them for days until they are dead. It's not a pretty sight.
To the OP learn the S.S.S method of predator control. What the DNR does not know will not hurt them just becareful of the radio collar. If you take care of one with a collar get rid of the collar or you better have a very good case of why you shot it. The MN DNR is not the easiest agency to deal with and their lack of livestock knowledge is astounding to say the least. |

Wolves will bite the hamstring of any animal and then eat them while still alive or leave them there to suffer! They do kill for sport!
I live in northern Utah, a rancher about 10 miles from my dad's ranch had a colt killed, they buried it before it could be looked at but the state trapper said it sounded like a wolf kill, and not 5 miles further there was a confirmed wolf kill of a calf. Neither animal was ate very much, just killed!
I am very much in favor of shoot on sight. We are a little further from the mountain than these ranches and haven't seen wolves on our place but we still keep a gun close just in case.
I would not hesitate to shoot one!

Don't tell me to "can it" and I have read and watched documentaries about wolves all my life. I understand they kill cattle and sheep but hey... Try reading the post you quoted and thinking about it.. A wolf will worry a moose or an elk until it is too weak to defend itself... It's not MEANT to be pretty.. Something that large can do terrible damage to an unwary wolf. Once injured by such an animal they will usually die because they can no longer hunt. Something like a cow or a sheep is easy pickings to the wolf that has survived for eons hunting deer, elk, buffalo and moose. Everybody acknowledges how smart dogs are. Where do you think that intelligence stems from? But they only have a part of that intelligence. How many domestic dogs could survive if left alone in the wolf's environment? Not very darn many. and I'm still waiting for that video that there are supposed to be so many of. |
