| I think it really depends on the year of the truck you're talking about. Seems like the people who are saying Dodge are talking about 2006's and older. The '06's and older are great in the cummins. We've had a '95 and '02 cummins and loved them. Then we had an '09 cummins that the turbo went out at 5000 miles and the clutch went out at 35,000 miles. We traded it in on an 2008 Duramax and I LOVE it. We still have that truck with 100,000 miles on it and it still runs great and has plenty of power and isn't chipped or anything. We have a 2011 Duramax in addition to the 2008 and I love it too. The 2011 has had to have a new urea tank and a new water in fuel sensor (all under warranty). I still love that pick up though. It has tons of power, I love the stock exhaust break, and it's not chipped or anything. My husband had a 2003 Duramax prior to the 2011 and I drove the '08 all the time. We traded the '03 in on a car cause I figured I needed a car with all the commuting I did. I HATED it, so 6 weeks later I traded the car in on the 2011. The Duramax's are so comfortable and nice to drive. |

| ecranch - 2014-08-25 9:38 AM rodeochick382 - 2014-08-25 8:16 AM I have a 2006 5.9 Dodge, and it will run off and hide from my Dad's 09 Durmax while pulling a load. It gets about 5 MPG better fuel mileage as well. Mine is a 6-speed, his is the shiftable automatic. I can't speak for the newer models though. I've heard fuel mileage pretty much sucks period on the new diesels. This would be the motor we would be looking for in a dodge. 5.9
I don't think you can go wrong with the 5.9. If I was looking for another pick up and didn't want to spend the amount of money on a Duramax, the 5.9 would be my next pick up choice! In regards to the transmissions, I think if you get an older Dodge (like one with a 5.9), the transmission holds up better. Although, I would most likely not own an older Dodge with an automatic in it. Our '95 Cummins went to 225,000 miles and the only thing we had to do was replace a clutch at about 175,000 miles. |

Location: Texas | I just got a 2013 ram 3500 and I love it. I have pretty much been a cummins gal and have had a 93. 2001, 2004, 2007, 2010 and now the 2013. All were 3500 with exception of 93 and 2010 the 2010 3/4 ton got 10 pulling full load and 15 to 16 empty and had to work a bit to pull my trailer. The new 2013 pulls like a dream and get better fuel mileage. It get 20 empty on hwy and about 11 to 12 pulling. The 2010 and 2013 are automatics and I have not had issues with trannies like I did with my 01. Personally I feel like you get nicer interiors and more features with ram for the money. |

Itsme - 2014-08-25 1:57 PM What do you see at the races and pulling campers all the time?
I find it's pretty evenly split between all three.
Crazy, I see very few Duramax trucks actually working.

Pretty sure there are several going down the road right now...Trevor Brazille, Sherry Cervi, Katie Garthwaite. |

shorti056 - 2014-08-25 8:22 AM not hijacking your thread--but can anyone lend any info on a new diesel's mileage when you're NOT hauling? town/highway? Thanks!
In my 2011 duramax, not hauling and down the freeway (like a weekend trip 200 miles away), I can get 19.7 mpg.  Around town not hauling I get 15 - 16 mpg. Hauling I'm in the 13 mpg range (5 horse aluminum stock trailer). I have a lead foot, though. My husband gets the best out of it when he drives it because he doesn't have to push the max speed limit. LOL He has 2008 duramax and he gets about 13 mpg no matter what he does. I think it's because of the way the emission systems work differently in the two.  The 2008 uses diesel to burn off the emissions and the 2011 has the urea tank and dumps urea into the fuel in order to burn it off.  Â
thanks! :) |

Location: In my own world | We've had 2 cummins and 2 Duramaxes. The old dodge (01) with a 6 spd manual hauled good. 04 Duramax hauled good got good mpg. No mechanical issues ever. Have an 07 dodge on it's 4th tranny. Keeping it for emotional reasons. It's JUNK. Traded the 04 for an 2015 Duramax. It's a beast. Pulls great, rides nice, looks pretty. About 17 mpg right now average. Cummins is a nice motor, but dodge overall is crap. My BIL is a cummins mechanic. Quizzed him when I was deciding which 2015 I would get. He said "get a dodge, I like job security" |

| For the record - I drive a GMC with a Duramax and Allison transmission. But - I've always said if they could make the ultimate Cummins automatic with an Allison transmission, on a Ford chassis, and the GM body it would be the ultimate rig. I think the Cummins is a work horse but well, they put them in a rig on a cheap chassis and a body that will crunch if it hits a squirrel - there IS a reason the Dodges are 10k cheaper. But for a nice pulling engine and ride - you can't beat the Duramax with the Allison transmission. Maybe the newer Dodges ride a little better now though? I get an average of 16-18 mpg unloaded back and forth to work, freeway unloaded 20-22 mpg, and loaded with trailer and horses - 12-14mpg. Your mpg will always vary depending on your speed. If you haul at max speed on freeways at 65-70 mph your mpg will go down significantly. I get the ultimate mileage in mine at 60 mph - loaded and unloaded. |

Didn't they put a modified Allison tranny in the 14 Dodges? I was thinking I would hang out before buying a new dodge for this reason. Have a 2011 dodge 3500 and it's been great. My 4th Dodge and no problems. Was previous ford customer for many years. |

I agree.... cummings if you want muscle and fuel mileage and longevity.... I've owned both a '96 Dodge manual 6sp (sold it) and now a '07 GMC Dura-Max.
I love my '07 DuraMax only because it is automatic and I was tired of shifting...plus the Dodge rode like a semi truck unless I was hauling my trailer/horses then it was smooth. The DM is smooth all the time...but sucks big time on fuel mileage. I have the DM chipped and depending on how it's set up. I can get better fuel mileage 10.2-12 mileage and crap pulling power up hills or 8.9-9.2 mileage and better pulling power up hills, that with my trailer. But I have so much more room in the DM and a super smooth ride either hook up to trailer or not. Now without the trailer the DM get 12 to 15mpg if I stay around 65/7 the way it's set up now.

| I have 05 ford 650 flat bed with a cummins and a allison. But i pull my 14lq with a 06 with a 5.9 with a cold air intake and 5 inch exhaust also had a juice with a attitude programmer, i get about 10 or 11 mpg ahd have about 43k. Love truck its a horse. Already change tranny fluid, i own a,shop the jasper man told me to get a oversize trans pan whic i hace ordered but i only haul 1 horse. But i love myntruck as it only has 43k. I know it is not e even broke in and my trailer had xtra wide stalls (3). they are 40inch. But my rollback does not, have the power that the 350 has as i have driven both. But on the dodges if you have a larger transmission pan you can order one and the xtra fuild will help the trans last longer and friver cooler and this is what themjasper man says is wrong with the cummings.

Location: Oklahoma | People... it depends on which year truck, motor, auto or stick, and so many other variable factors. It's like comparing apples and oranges. Each truck will have its strengths and weaknesses. It all depends on what you're willing to deal with. Being married to a diesel mechanic, I've seen the good and bad with each truck. We own a chevy with the LLY engine and the allison transmission. As far as the OP, you need to pick some years that you're interested in and go from there. |
