My mare is 16.2 hands tall and in prime shape I think weighs 1300-1350. She has the bone and foot to match her size. She is incredibly athletic, things are just effortless for her. When the time comes, I will breed her to a 16 hand or taller stallion as I want every possible chance at getting a 16+hand 1300+lb foal out of her. I like them BIG and TALL.

Our big horses get fed a little more hay than the smaller horses, but not all that much more. Our horses are all fed alfalfa with around 2lbs or less of sweet feed per day. And honestly our biggest problem is keeping weight off of horses.

Stitch is 16 hamds and weighs about 1350/1400 lbs right now but I have him a little over weight during off season.  I have just this year xrayed all of his joints and they are all clean. He has a lot of bone. His babies are ranging anywhere from 14'3 to 16'1 depending on the mare.  We did have a gelding once that was 16 hands and weighed 1510 on the scales at the vets office,. My daughter ran barrels and poles on him. Never had any issues with his joints.

This is the DTF mare I run for SG.  She is 16HH and was 1386# the last time I had her to the vet (in July) and they took a weight.  She is in running shape.  She hasn't had nearly as many joint issues as many horses I've had and I attribute that to her being correct and having a lot of substance.  She got hurt a year ago but that was a stall accident that had nothing to do with her size.

This horse is 16-1, thick and solid muscle --in top performance condition. I am the one standing and I am 5'5". I have never weighed this horse but I am sure that he does not weigh anything near 1400.

I have a 16 hh appendix qh. He weighed in at 1290, out of shape, at the vets. He's a bit fleshy right now but in better fitness than he was then. I'm guessing he's now in the 1300s.

He has no major soundness issues, knock on wood. Lol. He's 17 this year. Little lower hock arthritis but nothing horrible. His joints look pretty good overall.

In my experience they don't have bad soundess issues until the 16.3-17 hh range from size, but even then if they are correctly built, they are fine. I know many of the gp jumpers and dressage mounts are HUGE. I have heard eventers prefer them under 17 hh for soundness reasons. I'm taking in general, not really specific to barrel horses.

I just haven't seen too many that height running in my area. I usually have one of the bigger horses at the race, locally. They run a lot of smaller pens near me.

Here is mine.  He is an own son of Shawne Bugs.  He weighs in at 1425.  He is well over 16 hands.  He has been in the family since he was 2.  He was only 20 in that picture.  I still have him he is now 26.   He never had any maintenance problems at all.  I finally got his hocks injected when he was 17.  He could scoot around a barrel too and move like a smaller horse.  Love him to death.

If you look at the picture, you can see the legs of the mare I run now.

The most recent pic I have of him is from august it's not great but will give y'all an idea. He was being a goof and wouldn't stand still long...holder is 6'2 atleast. You can see how he's looking a little thin again. I have a little fear that he's about to make a big growth spirt. Maybe this one will be out instead of up.

Won't let me load a pic from my phone...

Husband's heading horse is 16hh/16.1hh and weighs in just over 1350#s. He'd easily weigh 1400 if I'd let him eat all he wants. He's tall, but certainly not a giant. He's just...BIG. Big boned, big bodied. Big and dumb, but the sweetest horse ever. Certainly not the most graceful thing alive...

He eats the least amount of any of my horses, just an easy easy keeper. He gets 2 lbs of Strategy Healthy Edge and a flake of brome, morning and night. That's it, nothing extra.

If he'll finish out to look like yours I'll be a happy girl
