I have an extremely short backed big wide shouldered decently withered horse that needs a saddle with a lot of rock to the bars and the best fitting thing I've found is an older Martha Josey round skirt barrel saddle. That little thing fits him like a glove, his muscles are built up where they should be and i don't even have to use a corrector type pad anymore. I will add that I bought it used and paid like 400 bucks for it so check out used older saddles! If you want I'll take a pic of it tomorrow and post it, it's so ugly from wear and tear and use but it works like a charm and is safe.

We have a short backed obese little mare that we've had a hard time with saddle fitting.  I have Cactus CJ's both the barrel racer and the Record breaker and I've also tried the Double J CJ Intimidator and Record Breaker.  They were all too long in the tree.  If you measure from the front concho to the farthest back concho that's a pretty good guesstimate of how long the tree is.  I got a hold of a Connie Combs saddle and it was at least 2 inches shorter than my CJ's.  You can always find her on FB or call her company.  They'll be happy to help you.

I use a Tammy Fisher treeless saddle by circle y on my short backed built like a tank mare. It works great on her.

Was going to give up and then I found it...The Brazilian saddle...12 lbs, rigged for back comfort and great for short backed horses.  Kinda ugly however lol

A Double J with the #10 tree,  the only thing is this saddle has more rock to it.

Ya I looked at the Brazil, it is ugly, but I'm looking at it also, I do prefer leather,I've been looking for used double js but have to sell my tex tan first, I was wondering if the cactus cj and the Reinsman cj had the same tree?

I went with a Triple Creek and a 26" 5-Star pad.

To me most of your round skirt saddles will fit better for a short back horse. And a round pad so it dont look so bulky.
