I was never taught to "hold" my horn for balance, I was taught to push myself back with the horn to sit straight up around my turns and not flop over the horses neck.
I can personally say I've rode my whole life and have still bounced a little here and there, but I do my best to stay in shape and do core exercises to keep myself strong and balanced.
I don't laugh or get mad at anyone just starting out we need to offer help rather then critique because everyone has to start somewhere! No one is a pro right away.
I have given lots of lessons and balance is the first thing I work on. That takes time and everyone is different. I guess since she is from down under maybe they don't have saddle horns yet. Just kidding! I played polo cross and those aussie stock saddles are awesome. I agree everyone has to start somewhere and there are people like me just getting back into things too. |

There's no telling what sort of trouble I might have found myself in. Sometimes we just get excited about what we think we know and want to tell everyone.
Some of her old posts that I just looked at will give you an idea of her level of knowledge and ability....and make you feel a bit silly for even arguing the finer points of horsemanship. |

Now your top barrel riders over there do ride in barrel saddles and know what the horn is for....this gal seems to not understand that.
XXX you might want to hold your opinions to yourself. We lived over there for a year and we rodeoed with some great people, they were nothing like your talking about...nothing. Hope your healing well....now get off the computer and do some P.T. |

| I made my first run in 20yrs a few weeks ago and I didn't use my horn.... simply because I plum FORGOT to!!! Lol! I think I was so focused on trying to remember to go left first on this horse. When I came out my hubby was like "I cannot freakin believe you did that twohanded"!! I had to watch the video because I was almost positive I was grabbing the horn... lol!!!! Ah well I had a blast! |

| I am not one to tell anyone how they should ride, I am not a perfect horseman so I dont preach to others about what they should or shouldnt do. So if she wants to not touch the horn I guess thats what works for her..her business ect.
I do have to say thought her experience with rodeo people is much different than mine. I realize we live two worlds apart. Rodeo for me is a family oriented sport. Most contestants I am around have too much time and money tied up to not treat it with some amount of seriousness. I travel with my husband, his partner, wife, and child. Lots of others pack up the whole family and take down the road as well. I know the negative stuff happens but its minimal compared to the positive (in my experience). |

Location: Cocoa, Florida | I know ladies in their 40-50s who are just starting out, as well as my step mom, yah she doesn't have the greatest seat but we have a horse that will take care of her no matter what.
I know girls who flop all over their horses and look like terrible riders but they clean house and win all day long, guess it doesn't matter how you get it done, different strokes for different folks. I was always taught to be a quiet rider so my horses stay light and easy. I struggle riding my free running filly but we will get it.
Don't discourage people from trying and having fun just because they are new or not the best riders!!!! |

Location: White Mountains of AZ | When I start my young horses, yes I will use two hands for a while. But when you start really running fast and turning hard, it's nice to have extra help! I as well was never taught to use the saddle horn for balance. When I first started running barrels I was on a slower 3d-4d horse and I was against holding the horn!!! But after getting quicker and riding higher caliber of horses, you better believe I use that horn to push my butt down pull my butt up!!! And even though I use my horn, I always get complimented on my balance and horsemanship?..I guess other people don't understand that holding the horn means you don't have any of that... :o
But this is just my experience :) |

In a nutshell if you use your saddle horn when riding or running barrels you suck! One has no balance and can't ride if you use that contraption affixed on your saddle. |

Do you think that she kind of noticed that it wasn't a good "idea" to "diss" barrel racers on a barrel forum......

I always use my horn, if I didn't I would go flying off my horse as we round the barrel. I also use it to push my fat butt out of the saddle when I am posting at the jog |
