Location: South Texas | Got the flu shot once, was sick all winter. Never again. Now I get a bad cold about once a year, but that's it. And I'm a teacher in a prison, so get exposed to all kinds of sickness. |

Location: Armuchee, GA, NW section of Ga | I turned 60 in August, same as my husband who is on dialysis. We have gotten the flu shots for the past several years since we are both in the health care field. I'm a retired nurse as well. We have not had any problems or flu like symptoms since taking the shots in the past. However this year I did. After getting the injection I immediately started having achy sniffles with general flu like issues. But after a week I was back to normal. Since our insurance pays totally for the shots, and my husband has a compromised health issues anyway, we will continue to hedge our bets that it will work.

Location: Texas | My husband and I started getting the flu shots when they started offering them at work probably 30 years ago. We have not had any problems with them. Might get a cold during the winter, but not the flu. As we get older, I see no reason to stop. The science has to be better now than 30 years so, I would think. Probably getting the pnemonia shot this year if the doctor recommends it. |

Location: Phoenix | I've never gotten the flu....when I lived in San Diego and was working with the public (car rental) I got my flu shot because I was exposed to a lot of people from all over. When I got my office job the next ear, I opted out. I'll probably opt out again because I don't come into contact with a lot of people and am not flying this holiday season. I would usually get a miserable 2 week cold after traveling home for the holidays to a colder climate--but that's it. |

| Have gotten one every year for about the last 10 years or so. Had the flu once, when they had the outbreak back in the 80's with the strain similar to the flu of the early 1900's. I was sick for almost a month. So if you feel bad 3, or 4 days after the shot, which I've heard of but it's never happened to me, well, that's a walk in the park compared to the real deal. |

| I stopped getting them about 10 years ago and I quit getting sick for the most part. A couple of years ago I did get the flu - tested positive, my doctor told me if I had gotten the shot, it wouldn't have prevented it because I had a different strain than the one they vaccinated for - since all that is an educated guess as to which strain will be going around. I opt to try to keep my immune system healthy and get plenty of SLEEP to avoid the flu. |

| I am around 350 kids every day! I see kids come to school sick all of the time and then get sent home 2 hours later after they have came in contact with 100 others! I always get mine. |

Location: Kansas | I don't get flu shots. Last year at work one person got a flu shot and she was the only one to get the flu.....gone for a week. Had lunch with a friend yesterday. She got a flu shot last winter and was deathly sick for two weeks......with the flu.

| So... sounds like they work unless you get a different strain than the shot:( I am most worried about the chemicals involved in the vaccine and later effects of it.... |

Location: Do I hear Banjos? | My decision is easy. Where I work University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences...Flu shots are MANDATORY for all employees. You can technically opt out...with completion of paperwork etc. But then you would need to wear a mask to avoid possibly spreading the flu during peak season. We have a lot of patients here undergoing all kinds of treatments including radiation etc in the cancer center. I know that is a big part of what drives the mandatory vaccination effort.
For me...I used to not get the shot...just busy and didn't see the importance. Then I got the flu one year...and missed 2 weeks of work. I almost never call in sick...ever...and I wanted to hurry up and die to get it over with. It was bad. So far with the shot I've not had any issues and of course no flu. You cannot get the flu from the vaccine. It's not a live virus. BUT...if your immune system doesn't respond and build immunity you can still be vulnerable to the flu. And/or you can get a strain not covered by this year's vaccination. Though generally since they are close in composition...you may get some benefit and a less severe illness if you had the vaccine.
If you chose not to get the vaccine...do all you can to boost your immune system. And wash hands frequently...especially after touching public doors/hand rails etc. I also use the theory of taking the stairs as much as I can instead of the elevator. Sick people don't typically take the stairs here at work. |

Location: Beggs, OK | This is the first time I've ever taken one. Our babies Neonatologist recommended that we all get one this year since we have preemies in the house. So far they have been incredibly healthy. I could not forgive myself if they were to get sick from something that we could have easily prevented. |

That would be one of very few situations I would actually consider getting one. It's always risk vs benefit. |

| I was told that since I am 7 1/2 months pregnant that I have to get one for baby. I'm not too sure about this, since I started eating Paleo I havent' gotten sick in a year and a half, pregnant or not. Everyone in my office goes to trade shows, travels internationally, etc...and there is always some kind of crap going around and everyone catches it but me. I don't want to get a flu shot, but I also would kill myself if I hurt my baby over something so trivial. :-/
