If you haven't ever run in that pen it takes some figuring how to approach the first barrel. The alley is so wide it makes it a different approach to the first. If your first barrel is off then the second is harder to get around. And on the third barrel it is so far off the fence it is just a different feel. And I also think everyone that ran knew they had to go for broke and just let it all hang out.

Location: Texas | I'm not 100% sold on those barrels but they were good when horses hit them bad and then ran over them- no cuts.
I'm not going to lie I was very disappointed in my runs. Lucy and I ran a 15.1 in the warm up with mistakes so I was really confident I could improve our time for the qualifier. When it came down to it she cheated me bad at the first barrel and there wasn't anything I could do to move her over and save it. She doesn't do it often but she did it tonight. I guess she was just super ratey.
Poor Bunny...she ran OK on Friday but apparently my new saddle was doing something with her because she's started shaking her head leaving the barrels again. Thankfully my mom packed my old saddle so I switched in time for the qualifier. She had an absces blow out the coronary band of her heel bulb Saturday morning. She never limped and I had no idea she had one brewing. Needless to say I was proud she went out there and tried as hard as she did. But oh well. Not what I had in mind. |

That was my take on it too, little off on the first so out of whack on the second, plus this was a lineup of horses that one or two extra steps and you were out of it. They were all asking for every ounce their horses could give. Some amazing riding too saving some barrels to make the top 10. |

Location: Red Raiderland | Sorry I slouched on the job last night! My connection would be strong then I'd go to submit something and it wouldn't send. I saw where the webcast came back up so I figured y'all had it. It was so awesome to watch and to think a high 14(14.9) didn't qualify those runners. Unbelievable to watch. |

I will bet Visworks will post it later if not today. They have done a great job, too. |

Lauren I know your take is right on on what happened with your runs. But I would like to say I have run in the pen numerous times and have watched what seems like thousands of runs there. There is a certain place in that alley (the alley being so wide) that you need to start from to get a good turn on the first. I am not saying that All horses need that spot but I promise you most do. And if you don't get started from that spot it messes your first barrel up in so many ways. Then the domino effect, bad first leads to a bad second and on. I watched your run on Bunny and you were not in that good place when you started. So as far as I am concerned things were sort of out of your control. I think you are a hero to me. You sucked it up entered and did your best. I am proud of you and your mares. Just keep on keeping on. You are a winner. |

Location: Texas | Thank you :). They were real sticklers on the forward motion rule in the alley and had a 60 second limit on getting in. At small races I can take my time and try and get her where I want but sometimes she hugs up against the wall and I can't pull her off it. So between the nerves of me not wanting to get DQed and I honestly don't even know the right place to position in that alley...everything was out of whack. I would definitely go back to the pen! It would have helped if I could have left in time for exhibitions. |

It's awesome you even entered! As we all know in barrel racing, things don't always go as planned ;)
There will be more races, and you will kick butt! You have some very nice horses. Everybody has some bad luck sometimes. Next race will be your day! :) |

Location: Red Raiderland | Lauren, I watched your run on Fri and I watched last night and you have nothing to be hanging your head about. Linda is right about lining up a certain way in the alleyway. Glen Rose is my favorite arena and I do love having the hill there but my mare has blown past first both days and I run left. Today will be better...I hope! Anyway, you've got some nice horses and you are a great rider. Chin up girl! |
