Location: on my horse | Hives is my guess but I would be getting him to a vet. Poor guy sounds miserable. I had an old guy that would get those oozy "bursting" hives ranging from tiny to half dollar sized. Don't give Dex if he has a fever, steroid can make some things worse if he's having some kind of response or sickness and has spiked a fever. |

Sounds like to me he layed/rolled in a fire ant bed, and those little bogger's hurt and make you itchy in all the spot's that they bite..
My guess would be they do not have Fireants in Oregon |

I say ants as well... they may be in the stall.

| My horse had just a few spots like that and I used Malaseb anti-fungal shampoo as directed every day for a week, then every other day for a week as directed, then 3 more times the following week and it went away. You may even try, on a small spot to test, Mane-n-tail because it has sulfur in it. But if he is getting worse, I'd call the vet. |

Location: Buffalo, Wyoming | I have a mare that has gotten them the last 2 years. They don't bother her and are usually gone in a few weeks. I messaged my vet last year about them, let me see if I can find his message back. |

Oh just a thought, I thought them little monsters were every where, but still sounds like it could be ants, when mine would get into fire ants this is what happen to them also the little raise bumps that would oozz sappy stuff. |

| mruggles - 2014-11-05 3:22 PM we have a few get this every fall(and only in the fall), its definatly not bugs............almost looks like rain rot but all over the body and small bumps......i think its a mineral deficency....and e seems to be the missing culpert.....this is strictly my opinion so if you are really worried about your guy take him to the vet......
m
Do you feed something extra to address this?

thanks. the list of what i have tried is long......one supplement is so far working on the one horse (fingers crossed) but it doesn't help the others....so im trying lysine(on 2), i have also read that black sunflower seeds help, so im goin to try that on a couple......they have access to trace mineral blocks and i tried one of the big tubs(which i hate btw) and it did nothing but get them covered in molasses..........

| I have a few horses that get these every fall too. I've never had them looked at by a vet, but probably should. It seems strange that it only happens in the fall and if it was a deficiency of some sort wouldn't that happen at any time of the year? My horses are on dry lot and eat the same thing 365 days of the year. |
