I love that she has the panache to pull of her wild outfits and now the helmets. Whatever the motivation for her wearing them be it safety, or merchandizing or both...the positive image of helmet wear is undeniable.
Hats off (and helmets on) to you Fallon! |

I'm with you.
Who cares if it's for money? If somewhere some young girl or guy is worrying about not being able to wear a pretty dolled up hat at the rodeo/show, and they look up on the TV and there's a barrel racer at the top of the game wearing a helmet, and think that maybe it's not so bad, then she's done a good thing.
If she makes some money in the long run, so be it. I know Nicole has had the helmet tough deal for awhile now, but Fallon is in the limelight right now and she's running with it. |

"Every time I see someone ranting about how helmets are a personal choice I think:
That's a pretty selfish choice. You splatter yourself, you want to know what happens?
You traumatize the person/people who see it happen or find you.
You cause untold amounts of grief for ANYONE who cares about you.
You force your family to pay for a funeral for your splattered body.
Your horse will probably be sold on to someone else. Maybe they'll get lucky, or maybe your family will blame him and dump him at an auction. And he won't get lucky.
But you have no control over any of it, because you're DEAD.
That's assuming you die.
If you don't die, and just get a traumatic brain injury... Well its your lucky day, ain't it?
Maybe your ability to breathe will be compromised, and they'll alter your airway so you breathe through a hole in your neck.
Maybe you'll be incontinent and spend the rest of your life in diapers, sh*tting your pants.
Maybe you'll be REALLY **** LUCKY, have to relearn to walk, talk, feed yourself and wipe when you go to the bathroom. And have a sort of normal life afterwards.
Or you could put on a helmet. It might hurt your pride. It might make your head sweaty! You might not look as picture perfect without your hair flying loose.
But you're a hell of a lot less likely to get yourself killed that way." |

Location: The South | I think it's awesome. I never thought about wearing a helmet until last year after my brain injury. I never would've thought that I would almost die while just loping circles out in the pasture. It was a moderate traumatic brain injury and I'm still recovering 14 months later. I don't know if it would've been prevented had I been wearing a helmet because the primary impact was my left eye area, but I'll be wearing a helmet from now on.
It's a little intimidating because not many mounted shooters wear helmets, but I've invested over $100k in my brain (I'm a pharmacist), and my student loans aren't paid off yet so I'd better protect my brain from now on!! |

It has almost been a month since my last concussion. My life has been turned upside down. I can no longer take the risks that I did before. I'm selling off my best horses so someone else can compete on them. Fortunately, I have had someone with me 24/7. I've been making progress but feel like I'm stuck in a loop. I have a good day or two and then bad day or two or three. I have had trouble sleeping, terrible headaches, vision problems, balance problems, memory problems, speech problems, and have felt like I am in a fog.
I applaud Fallon for daring to be different, putting vanity aside, and wearing a helmet. Love that color coordination too. What a great example and role model. Hopefully many others follow suit. I have, and am very happy with my new Tipperary at the recommendation of other BBs.
Did you have an MRI?!? All of your symptoms sound like what I went through, and I had waaay more than a concussion. They told my husband I had a concussion and sent me home, but I got worse and he took me back a week later and they did an MRI and said I had a 'moderate traumatic brain injury'. I spent a week at an inpatient rehab place and then followed up with outpatient speech therapy twice a week for 4 months. Please PM me if you have any questions, I'm worried about you. I remember posting on your helmet thread but I didn't realize you were having such a rough time. |

Location: North Dakota | CoachRider - 2014-12-11 7:54 PM I like Fallon and want her to win it all, but i hate when people push safety BS and even worse when they do it for money and attention...........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................I agree w/this statement, it is all about marketing, the more fans for whatever reason, the more clothes and now helmets she will sell........ Shame on you both! Head safety is not BS! I don't care if she's making money off it or not, the attention she is getting for wearing a helmet AWESOME! Besides, is there now something wrong with making money? That shouldn't be a bad thing. It's not like she's selling drugs, she's selling safety equipment! The fact that ANYONE can say wearing a helmet is the wrong choice is stupid. If you don't want to wear one, whatever. I really hope nothing happens to you! But you have to think if the risk is really worth it. People in every english discipline as well as EVERY other extreme/dangerous sport wear helmets, why do western riders think they're above getting hurt?
Also, if you think helmets are hot, uncomfortable, block your vision, etc. YOU ARE WEARING A HELMET THAT DOES NOT FIT. Like any other piece of equipment, your helmet must fit you. I never once sat on a horse without a helmet until I was 18. You really do not notice the helmet. A cowboy hat is much more cumbersome!

Location: Texas | I have never met Fallon Taylor and I don't believe she has ever run at Diamonds & Dirt Classic -- but regardless, I am forever sold as a fan.
I have said for the past five years that these barrel racers have a platform at the NFR like no other.... EVERY young barrel racer to mature can chaser all tune in anxiously to watch these 8 minutes each night for ten exciting days. The outfits...the dirt...their choice of horse (or backup horse) its all scrutinized. I love the way Fallon thinks outside the box and OWNS IT!!! Yes, its a great marketing avenue but aside from that I truly feel she unconditionally believes it in her heart that smart people protect themselves when having extreme fun.
My 8 year old little girl rides in a helmet and its a conditioned response for her. She started in the English world - so she didnt give it a second glance when I told her she had to wear one running barrels. We find fun covers and spray paint it with glitter...safety can be fun!
The moment I saw her fly down the alley on the 3rd go round with a helmet on I called our marketing geniuses and said "Fallon Taylor is making a concentrated effort to break the barrier -- lets help push the movement and show the next generation its cool to be safe"
I spoke with LaTricia and our DDBHC team and we announced Diamonds & Dirt was donating $100 to K9s4KIDS.org for every night anny barrel racer wore a helmet. Fallon immediately stepped up and was generous enough to match our pledge of $100 and has encouraged her fan and followers to do the same. Since the NFR has begun we are over $3000 and building rapidly from outside matches. When Fallon wins the world we will place a $15,000 K9 in a school thanks to her efforts to bring awareness - like the helmet when you ride, these K9s are trained to keep our kids safe in an environment where they can have fun and learn! The next K9 in a school we place will be special because we are naming it in honor of Fallon Taylor. This woman took a platform and was able to influence a generation. Along the way she is instilling confidence and keeping the next generation safe!
Forever a Fallon Fan,
Kristi Schiller

Wow, sounds like you really had a rough time of it too. I will have to PM you. I had a CT at the ER. Saw a neurologist who sent me for another CT with contrast. I go for an MRI with/without contrast next week. Supposed to have an appointment with a neuropsychologist for testing.

Amen to this! If you don't want to wear one for you, consider wearing one for your loved ones. An injury like this takes a toll on everyone who cares about you. Not to mention the immense medical expenses. |

My 7 year old daughter also wears a helmet and doesn't think twice about it. I grew up riding hunters and jumpers and you didn't get on a horse without a helmet. I'm grateful to Fallon Taylor for stepping outside the box and owning it. She is setting an example and wheter or not people choose to follow it.... |

Location: North Dakota | I for one am super happy to see someone actively promoting helmet wear at the NFR and barrel racing. I think it is a great inspiration for those people who would like to wear a helmet, but are insecure about how it may look. Be true to yourself and if you want to wear a helmet; DO IT. No matter what color it may be.
