rodeowithjoker - 2015-01-26 3:58 PM These are all nitpicky itty bitty things so don't think I hated the run - it looked nice. BUT, to get those last few tenths, she needs to really leave the barrels. It looked to me like she hesitated leaving 1st & 2nd and then hung up pretty bad behind third. There's MORE than 3/10ths on those little things. Not to mention it didn't look like she really hustled home.

That said, if the ground is iffy there, and you're on a seasoned veteran rodeo horse, odds are they are going to safety up and run a little slower. I can tell when my gray doesn't like the ground because he'll be in the 2D instead of near the top of the 1D. He'll just ease up a tad and take care of us, which is likely what your mare did in that run and the one at Mike's if the ground there was bad too.

When I'm having one hesitate leaving a barrel, I'll do a rollback or two during their next warmup and get them to hustle out of it a few strides. Works like a charm on my gray horse.

That is what I am feeling.  She was leaving my butt all last summer and I was really having to hustle to catch up and get ready for the next barrel.  I know it is there, but trying to find it again.  I had to change her turns to get that snap back.  We are better than we were the first run back, but not where we can be.

Thanks!!!!!  (I don't mind nit picks, Heck I have nit picked you. LOL

Glad you didn't get all butt hurt over my comments. :) I think my boyfriend thinks I'm way too critical when people ask me where they lost time on a 1D run because I can almost always come up with some tiny thing. He doesn't realize I'm even meaner to myself! LOL.

To the op what I am seeing is

About two strides before first, you pull her head to the outside, this will cause her time as she dropped her inside shoulder as you are pulling on the other, so she had to maneuver and pick it back up.

Around first I would drive her into the turn more as it looks like she is turning too soon and then having to move around the barrel instead of hitting it.

Soundness issues also worry me as when she leaves first barrel she switches the front but not the hind until the last second before second.

Going to third, again you pulled her head out for a split second throwing her off balance then she lost all her momentum on third, stuck a leg went to turn back and the barrel was in the way causing her to blow out.

Also I really noticed sitting for third when you pulled her face outside you were leaning back, sit your but in the saddle, then curve your back forward and stay centered.

Going second to third I can't figure out if the horse is crossfiring, might be for a few strides.

Also you need to use your inside leg to get her to bend in the ribcage and move away when needed instead of pulling to the outside.

She doesn't look fit to me and she needs to keep her forward motion more at the barrels, she is setting way too hard, more than too early. We were just talking about that this weekend... Those kind of horses are fun to watch, but they don't clock like you think they would. Imagine what she could do if she didn't drag her butt quite so much.

How would I fix that? I wouldn't do any rollbacks, lol. I would do things like spirals, from big to little (like barrel tight) circles. Make her keep her forward motion in the little circle and don't let her drop down into a trot. She should be able to go around that barrel (tight) about three times before you move off from it. Just use one barrel in the middle of the pen. You fix that and you'll be spanking them, ;).

The other drill I can think of to encourage forward motion around a barrel is my other favorite for my gray - walk up, trot around or trot up, lope around. Go around the barrel faster than you approached it. That is my absolute favorite for a setty horse.

1. Quit bouncing all over your horse. 2. shorten your reins. 3 GRAB THE HORN! 4. Sit to rate. 5. Shape for 3rd, your holding

her off and nose tilted out. 6. LOOK up to see where your going. there are no maps on that ground.
First barrel you rated 3 strides to soon.sit for the turn and use your horn and legs to move out or shape for the barrel. Second was kinda clean. Make her move of your leg more going into 3rd and keep your hands down. Nice run. Steady yourself and you could make up a whole second.

This is what I see and feel too, she does it going from 2 to 3 as well.   She dropped in for the first too which is why I picked her up out of it with my outside rein (VERY BAD HABIT!!!!!) I have not figured out how to keep her moving once she sets to turn.  I have had to do a lot of creative riding to try to keep barrels up, which has led to the pulling off habit.   She creamed 2nd and 3rd in the same pen a few nights before, so I get to over compensating and trying to think before she can react.

Thanks Cheryl!

Thanks for your opinon.

I am not sure where I bounce at all except on 2nd after I was out of position trying to miss the barrel.  I did stand in the stirrups going to 2nd to reposition myself and try to keep her moving forward.  My rein length is a personal preference, sorry I ride them a little longer on everything (it keeps me from balancing on their head).

Can you point out where I was bouncing so I can see it too? I have never seen bouncing in my runs so I want to see what I am missing. I highly doubt I can make up a second. LOL I wish!!  I would like to see the animal that could make a sub 16 run in there.

She's running with her head in the air going into 1st. She really slowed down leaving 1st going into 2nd. Picked up her speed leaving 2nd (I am going to guess because she went into and finished 2nd correctly). You pulled her nose to the outside going into 3rd vs shaping her and helping her finish so she had a bobble leaving and had to get her bearings to run home. She looks like she has worlds more speed though. All of that being said, if this is the most of your troubles with her, you are pretty lucky! She does look pretty great to me!

Is she used to running indoors? those indoor pens can slow horses down so much in the winter.

I just read this, might be worth the read for you giving her something new to get her mind on helping her to start listening to what you need.

She hates indoors!! That is a LOT of the issue. I can get around her at the really small pens and run my pony, but in the larger ones I need one that has longer legs.

Between first and second. You were behind in leaving and when you raised to go forward you immediately sat down 2 more times, your horse set when you set to keep her balance and that also cost you some time. Your reins are long cause you don't want to" balance on the reins"? That is what the saddle horn is for.Shorten your reins and learn to use the horn...don't be afraid... It will give a 1/2 second if you just use it. Use more leg to keep from diving in. Think in front of your horse. Again nice horse.
