First off, if you question it, call them - the phone numbers are always on the forms.
Yes, the Decennial Census is done every 10 years. Those that have done the census in the past will remember that the old form was quite lengthy & many more questions than the current ones. This particular one that Roxieannie has gotten is called the American Community - it takes the place of the long one & does not go "door to door" like the Decennial one. The addresses are chosen via computer, and usually will only have one per "block" per month
(not as in a city block, but as in how the Census districts are made up
). The next month will probably be another house in that block & so on. This are done for the address, not the "person". A typical span is every address would receive this long form every 20-25 yrs. This is legit & is required by law.
How it works: you first get the one in the mail, with the option of either filling that one out or doing it on line. If you ignore that, the next month you may get phone calls from the call center
(NOT my favorite people
). If you have not responded by the 3rd month, they will send a field representative out to do a home visit. That person SHOULD be able to explain it all to you & what the reasons & importance of this is.
So it is NOT a scam, is all legit, and it is required by law and there are many people in this country who are employed by the Census Bureau to do this interview and many others you've probably not heard of. How do I know? I am one of them & yes, I do home visits in my county & the one south of us on this particular one.

Sometimes select people or random people are given additional questions, however, that happens during the regular census, so it still doesn't make sense that you would get this one. I found a link to the censuses done by the Census Bureau,
http://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/are-you-in-a-survey/survey-list.html
. Honestly the questions like when you go to work sound very strange, I would call the USCB to find out if it's legit.
it is the American Community survey on the link you gave.
