 I would take a guess it depends on size of horses.my warmbloods prefer no mangers.. they fit better.. I had a 4 star 3 horse slant custom made  8 wide and  loved the extra head room for them. their butt still hit the rear.. though..

I've had both!! Really love having mangers for lots of reasons! (Storage, feeding, etc..) But now I have a horse that HAS to eat with her head down. She's got a little bit of an issue with her flapper and we've been dealing with that with our vet... But now the only time she coughs or has any trouble with it is after she eats out of a hay bag or with her head at a higher level.. Very thankful that now I have a trailer without mangers.. I feel like they do have a little more room and can put their head down and relax if they want. JMO!!
