Location: In the Hills of Texas | There is a big difference and not wanting to spend money and not having the money to spend. I would find and call a Collie rescue and see if they would surrender the dog to them and they would get done what needed to be done. |

Location: Ohio | I question any vet who prescribes aspirin to dogs who need long term relief from something like hip dysplasia as continued use can cause ulcers and kidney damage because their systems can't break it down properly. I would be getting a second opinion. |

| I hope people will refrain from attacking OP about the money issue. She's here to get advice for dogs that do not belong to her, but her grandmother who is probably on a fixed income as most seniors are. If we focus on the money, we're going to sabotage an effort to get the dog some help.
Asprin in this case is like a cheap band aid. Obviously, this vet knows your gma isn't going to spend the money and so, he/she isn't going to waste writing a prescription or order xrays etc. See if you can get the dog to a collie rescue. One thing to look for if it the dog is able to control it's bowels etc. Sounds to me like both dogs ingested something. Good luck, I hope you are able to get the help that the pup needs. |

I agree.. in this case... and it does sound like hit by car or injested poison.. even the frogs we here can cause paralysis.. Ops trying to help and vet may be just trying to do what he can for the situation.. I have seen this before with elderly.. if dogs in pain Id euthanize him or take to a collie rescue.. there is help out there.. but I understand the situation as well.. |

Location: Arkansas | Had one do this that had eaten a dead mouse that was killed by rat poison.. He came out of it just fine once we got him to the vet. Vet had us give him Albion (for three days I believe?) and wormed him. He was good in two. It does look like hip dysplasia at FIRST.. but then they become lethargic and lose all muscle control. |

YES! AND collies are usually a little more susceptible to that as well. Hope the dog is feeling better no matter what treatment plan you're following. AND I can totally understand the money side of this, I'm sorry if I ruffled feathers, that was not my intent. |

| Update!
He never threw up or had diarrhea, the vet explained that the damp weather caused a flare up with his joints. The pills seem to be helping a little bit, and he can almost get all the way uip. If you help him up, he can walk a little. Praying he will continue to get better. Must be a strange coincidence that he started getting bad a few days after the other one died. Thanks for all the help guys! |

Location: Central Arkansas | Ask the vet about Tramadol. It is a pain med that might work better than aspirin. We have an old dog on it. The vet can call in the prescription to the
pharmacy. It is not expensive and is actually cheaper at the pharmacy than at the vets. |

I agree with this. This med made a tremendous improvement on my daughter's doxie. |

Location: Adopt a homeless pet - www.petfinder.com! | My mom is on social security and this is what her old sheltie is on for his arthritis pain. She gets the prescription at pharmacy and it saves her a lot of money. She also takes it herself for arthritis and always has her prescription as a back-up for him. That said I think they have to keep an eye on kidney or liver values if they take it regularly. |
