Find some play days to go to. They tend to have tons of fun things to do. BUT if you have any hope of competing in a futurity DO NOT COMPETE IN THE BARRELS. Not until December. Period.

You can do time only and exhibitions. But absolutely no competition for money, awards, trophies, etc.

When the one girl said you should running at the top of the 1D, you need to think about that as meaning you are running a 1D time NOT ACTUALLY COMPETING IN THE 1D.

If you compete before December in the barrels your horse will not be allowed to run in any of the futurities.

He can compete in poles, roping, trail, etc.

But if you have any real solid futurity plans, don't screw them up by jumping the gun in the barrels. :)

I have actually misinterpreted the use of this word. Since I've never ran barrels except goofing off with friends. I thought she meant as i planned on running him in barrels period. Next year I plan on doing just timed events, local stuff, very small barrel wise. Larger shows doing other things to get him set up in the correct atmosphere and still staying relaxed.

This year I dont even want to compete compete but just get into it. I have NO rodeo background. I come from a family that doesnt no jack about horses. I would like to get into it with a few ppl locally so I can emerse myself in 'the rodeo world' =P

So you misunderstood the use of the word 'futurity' as being just any competition? It's a very specific kind of competition. Check out the BFA.

Running in futurities is expensive but there are some big payouts, especially if you are enrolled in incentives.

Even if you do not feel like competing in these with your boy, it always helps to educate yourself on the different kind of competitions. I'm going to run my 3 year old in some 5 year old futurities so she won't see an actual competition, only exhibitions, until December before her 5 year old year.

When it comes to gaming and barrel racing there are several different types: juveniles (for 3 year olds), futurities (for 4 and some for 5 year olds), derbies (for 6-7 year olds), jackpots (usually your small local weekend stuff), supershows (the big payout, big attendance ones that last a week or more), playdays/gymkhanas (usually small stakes with ribbons and not paychecks, family oriented and multi-event), breed shows (like AQHA), and rodeos.

Some horses are good for one or more of the above, some are just jackpot horses. Some do well at rodeos. It's always good to know all your options.

ETA: You also have different divisions outside of just the different types. You can be in an amateur class, a seniors class (usually over 45, 55, or 65), a youth class, etc. It can get complicated quick. The toughest is usually in the Open classes at super shows.

This is the kinda of information I need. Lord I feel clueless. Lol I was never aware of this. Or that it I participated in certain events I could not run him in futurities.
