Location: Mountains of VA | So far, the Pentosan Gold has not helped but then this horse just received his second weekly shot today. I'm hoping to see some results. Per vet, I am supposed to keep riding him at a walk and trot but I feel horrible because he is obviously hurting. |

| How much of the Pentosan do you give per dose? Is a loading dose 4 doses given one week apart? Do you have to have a prescription to get the Pentosan from horseprerace? |

| I'm wondering for a friend. They have an older western pleasure mare who is LAME. She has been lame since she was a 3 year old. She lives on bute (yes, it probably has destroyed her internal organs), but now even with bute she can barely walk without limping. Would pentosan help at all? They keep saying they are going to get injections, xrays, blah blah, but they have owned this mare for at least 5 years and nothing has been done to help the poor thing.
I ask now because they are planning to run barrels with her in a few weekends, and I just get sick to my stomach even thinking of them pushing this lame horse even harder than they already do. |

They would actually run her when she can't walk without limping?? |

Yes. They don't really care about the horse, obviously. They will run her because she's wicked fast, too bad she's probably going to turn into a bronc horse when they ask her to run because she bucks when you barely get her out of a western show lope (the slightly extended english lope is too much for her). |

So I ended up getting something similar to Pentosan Platinum from my vet, except it's compounded in Weatherford and not from horseprerace. We have to give it IV. Once I'm out, I'll probably order from HPR and get the Gold so that I can give it in the muscle myself. I am NOT comfortable giving it IV so my vet agreed to come out and administer it for me. The only problem is that I have a hard time getting him to come out on a monthly basis on time. Which I TOTALLY understand and he's not charging me a farm call. It's just frustrating. I do need to inject at least one of his hocks....but it's been a year and he's finally showing signs of needing it. |

Is Pentosan something I should think about? Alternate or use with? I've heard of it, but don't really know much about it.
If you don't mind me asking what you pay for your Polyglycan and how often you give it? It's $83 for 10cc vial or you can get 6 vials for slightly less per vial. I give 5cc at a time. I don't give it all the time. Last year at the NBHA World show she ran 1st go round last hole in the 2D (too fast to qualify in 3D) in the first go. The vet there was giving shots for $30 a shot. We knew she had problems with the concrete so I figured we would give it a try. The 2nd go she qualified in the 1D, which is more like her.
My daughter thought it lasted about 3 weeks, but it seems to work almost immediately so I give the shot...then if she runs about 3 weeks, if she has another show we give again. If not, we don't until a few days before the next show.
I kept thinking it was just like Adequan, and didn't really pay much attention to it until the vet up there suggested it.
I'm mostly curious about the Pentosan and what the difference is. I know it is less expensive but I have heard it's not great for bleeders because it is a thinner? I always trying to save money but keep the horse comfortable!
I also use Poly and have for the last 3 years. LOVE the results. Depends on the horse, but my retiried horses I give twice a year my competitive horse I give every 3-4 weeks. I asked my vet about the other products and all he said was if Poly is working for your horse don't fix what is not broken. So I haven't dared change. |

Same here, I have no problem giving IV shots but my vet prefers to give this IM. I did have an issue with the straight Pentosan when I gave it IM but I think my bottles were mislabeled, was given the oral Pentosan instead of the injectable. I have not had any soreness at all from giving the Pentosan Platinum from HPR IM. |

| Thank you. I was scared to give it IM since the label says IV and I read that since it has HA in it it has to go IV. |

Location: Georgia | Okay I have a young mare i am riding with a previous knee injury. Chipped the back of the knee but has been cleared for cometition. She is on Previcox daily but I am trying to decide between Pentosan Gold, Platinum, or Polyglycan to make her feel her best for competition. Which product does everyone like best and how you administer it? Ive seen so many different answers on here it is hard to pinpoint what I should try first. I just want to keep the joint as healthy as I can for as long as I can. I have heard very good things about Pentosan Gold in the past. |

| This is NOT a bash on the Pentosan gold. Have used either Chondroprotec and Polyglycan in past years and decided to try the Pentosan Gold. Administered is IM and 3 of my horses would run a temp and have various degrees of body soreness within 12 hours of giving shot. Had a conversation with supplier who felt giving in the butt/hamstring as I had, might be the problem, so I went to the neck. Still bad reaction.
So next round I tried the straight Pentosan. No negative reaction at all. I am wondering if the Glucosamine and Chondroitin in the Tribute feeds I use is somehow interacting with the Pentosan Gold. The reason I think this is that each horses' negative reaction was proportional to the amount of feed they get. The mare that gets just a little, no reaction. The two older mares I push feed to had the most severe reaction.
You have to understand that if it almost never happens , it will likely happen to me.....just ask my vets. In years past I have had a couple of horses react to joint injections, getting a temp, body soreness and even swelling of the joints injected, and it was NOT a case of infection (although we had that happen once too). In the future I will just go with the straight Pentosan.
Never had much improvement with Adaquan, Chodroprotec, Polglycan OR Legend when injected IM anyways. |

| We did a full round of Adequen, as they suggest which is a whole box given every 3 or 4 days I think, twice a year. In between that we give the Pentosan Gold every other week when we are hauling them and using them and then my filly who is just starting to go gets the Pentosan just like the others every other week. We have had good luck with it on our horses and I think its the most cost effective way to keep them on preventive joint maintence vs a feed thru, atleast this way I know they are getting it and its not on the ground. |

This is my vet's thinking. He called compounding facility to confirm and that is what they advised: IV. |

| I gave my mare her first dose of pentosan platinum, IM, tonight. We will see what happens. I gave her four shots, a week apart, of regular pentosan and I didn't see any results. |

Location: Georgia | Did your vet not recommend doing the platinum IV? I am interested to see how it works IM. Please post an update in a couple weeks! |
