total performance - 2015-09-06 7:07 AM They have something on these lines every labor day here in Oklahoma.  I've never been, but from what I hear it's in a pasture and the pattern is huge.  Maybe some from here will come on that's been and give a clue.
It is on grass and a half mile long. When Clem was alive the third barrel was around a pond dam. Now the people doing it have them turning hay bales I think. Held with the pasture roping with like a 105' score.

It would be out in a canola field that has been cultivated and harrowed. I hadn't thought about someone falling off... Two sides of the 1/4 section are fenced, but otherwise it's wide open prairie. You ladies who have been to one like this, did you have to sign waivers or how did that work?

WrapN3MN - 2015-09-05 9:25 PM Definitely not for me. I would worry about where my horse would run off to if she fell and I didn't stay on.
That is something I wasn't even considering.  Good point.

If I hit the dirt, my mare usually goes off 20 or 50 feet and stops. It is the same on trails, though, no fences and if you fall off there is always that gamble. And it has happened to me before on trails, so I'm pretty sure of what my horse would do. But, my mare was also originally very lightly started on stopping for like a calf roper before I got her, so I think she knows better than to wander off, ha-ha.

There was a place local to me that did some jackpots and only had a chute. They only held them for a year. Most ppl never came back because of not having any fencing.

I grew up without an arena. Every year, we'd have a certain field put into summer fallow where my dad would plant sweet clover to plow down. I'd convince him to plow up a little corner for me every year where I could set up my barrels and poles. When the clover would get too tall mid-summer, he'd plow it down again.

Never had perfect ground. Never had fences. We got a long just fine! (My horse was a pro at running in deep dirt, haha.)

So I wouldn't hesitate to go to a barrel race with no fences! But I would definately take great care to look at safety factors.
-What will you do with a runaway horse?
-What will you do if someone falls off?
Etc.

So just some things to think about. But I would totally go!

Β Do you all remember the story about Kristie Peterson's great horse, Bozo, getting loose from them somewhere they had stopped in between rodeos. He didn't run back to the trailer. LOL He put his head and tail up and flat ran off for fun. Her husband was finally able to catch him. Scary!

A broke horse will turn the barrels and never even tink about fences.

For me, it wouldn't be an issue unless I came off and my horse ran. He's not always the easiest to catch. He's very social and has a tendency to run up to other peoples' horses or make a game out of it and let me get real close before he trots off again.
